Ethernet filters: Waversa EXT-2 vs Muon Pro (and some cable comparison)

Give it a few days to open up… be patient!

Truer words never spoken…

Muon USB was 150-200 hours. Not sure if that translates to the ethernet cable or not.

The complete Muon Pro streaming system should have 250-300 hours (the biggest progress within. The first 150) to perform at its best and at a stable level. During that time it’s no linear development.
But the wait is definitely worth it! :star_struck:

Luca, you have the fixed end of Muon Pro cable going into MSB, and Pink Faun cable goes into Tempus switch as your preferred direction, right? I remember some users like the reverse way. But I am sure you tested both directions before.

I have the fixed end going to MU2 now, and that’s N.A. recommendation currently. Didn’t they recommend the other way at one time?

Not into the MSB, Donald but into the Innuos Statement, the fixed cable of my Muon Pro. And the Pink Faun Ethernet cable on the other end, plugged into theTempus switch. This is my sweet spot having tried all the possible options.

The NA guys recommend this setup first, but the other inverted combination is also suggested as an alternative to try, everyone has their own preferences.

Innuos Statement it is, and how could I forget about that!

I switched the direction so Omega ethernet cable is going into MU2, and Muon Pro fixed cable is going into SW-10. It has been 20 minutes, and I do not hear a major difference. But the sound may be a bit warmer and softer; I am not sure really.

The good thing about this layout is the filter box is not hung in the air. I can lay the box on the floor on top of an Isopod behind the back rack. In terms of looks I like this way better. I will leave it on for a couple of days to decide.

I’m glad the Omega works when paired with the Muon Pro, anyhow.

I really prefer the reverse way as, like you say, the MUON Pro isn’t hanging in the air.

This is the way I run my MP reversed. The muon filter is closer to the switch and the difference in sound quality is very noticeable on my setup.

With Omega at MU2 the SQ is more familiar, but just better. I always like iOmega’s ability to not only cleanup digital noise, but also make streaming sounding more analog.

With Muon Pro at the streamer, the SQ is a shade towards digital. Granted the change was slight, but with Muon Streaming cable in front of two switches, this character was more present.

Since both Muon filter and the cable are still breaking in, I will switch back after another week to compare again.

The MU2 has been running non-stop for five days to break in the Muon Streaming cable, and what I found it

  • The system has been sounding better than the day before on everyday
  • Today the cable has about 100 to 110 hours of break in, and I can hear the SQ has
    made even more improvement
  • After I moved Shunyata Omega to the streamer side, I like the sound better.
Omega had made my system sound sweeter, more analog, and comes with
    tons of details.

I will stay for a few more days before I make any change. So far, I really like the Muon Pro system.

Great to hear! Ya the Muon Pro really improved every single setup I have been using.

Muon Pro and Shunyata Omega worked for me.
The cable located from filter to streamer is my choice as well. My self reinforcing logic is that you would scrub the signal first and give it the best ride to the streamer. But whatever works, works.

Or use an ENO2 between ISP router and switch in addition. That’s another tweak to further improve things.

Jdee, just as you mentioned, I am using an Eno2 between my router and the first of two switches (an EE 8Switch) in my ethernet set-up. The Eno2 system (including the filter and two cables) is a clear improvement over the original Eno filter. If using just a single ethernet filter, however, the Muon Pro is definitely the preferred choice.

I’ve also been trying out a couple of different arrangements for the placement of my Muon Pro system (including the filter and cables). When I first got the Muon Pro a while back, I placed it just upstream of my Innuos Zen server/streamer, with the shorter fixed cable attached directly to the Innuos Zen. (This is the usual arrangement recommended by Network Acoustics.) The longer Muon Pro cable was placed between the input on the Muon Pro filter and the output on the second ethernet switch (an Innuos PhoenixNet) in my streaming system.

Given the ongoing concerns about maximizing performance by running the Muon Pro at Gigabit speeds, rather than being compromised by a slower switch like the PhoenixNet, I decided to flip the positions of the PhoenixNet and the Muon Pro. So now I’m running the Muon Pro upstream of the PhoenixNet, with the PNet attached directly to the Zen streamer. On the surface, it would appear that the Muon Pro would now have its chance to filter the ethernet signal before it reaches a potential PNet bottleneck, but that assumption is probably just a simplistic delusion by someone (namely, me) who doesn’t fully understand how ethernet works as a bi-directional system. Regardless, I’m liking the way things sound with the current set-up. I’m getting a bit more of the richness and liquidity of the PNet when it is last in the ethernet chain, just before the streamer. I’ll flip the positions of the PNet and Muon Pro again at some point to see if the sound quality changes again with the original set-up.

David, after reading your post, I also became intrigued with turning my unit around and see what happens. I was curious to know if you already tried that first and if so what is your findings.
Cheers,
Ian

I started with the recommended orientation, and that was with the Muon Pro’s fixed cable at the streamer. I switched after one week, and now the fixed cable is on the switch side.

I believe it really depends on which ethernet cable you are using with the Muon. If you are using Muon streaming cable, the fixed cable at the streamer should provide better sound. In my case, I like Shunyata Omega at the streamer better. This is one of the best ethernet cables on the market and put it at the streamer side gave a better sound in my system.

I’m Paul but if reversing works more power to you. The Muon filter is quite different then the IFI filter so I’m not sure if it works.

Did Muon Pro filter make a change on appearance, or upgrade? The picture of it on the website shows both ethernet ports are on the same side. Their old one is one side in and one side out.

@luca.pelliccioli, since you are the ambassador of Network Acoustic brand, do you know anything more on the change?
