Firmware updates and fixes for the new Directstream MK2

Streaming and playing different sample rates and DSD playback are perfect. Transitions are also perfect here. No ticks, pops or anything. :+1:

mmm. I hope this is me doing something wrong, but after doing the update of the fpga to 208 and the UI to 2.5.0, I can no longer set the output volume of the DAC. Not with the arrows on the front panel, nor the remote.
It’s stuck at 0 :frowning:

I removed the USB stick and rebooted after the update.

Is the “fixed” icon on? If so, go through the menu to ‘Audio Output’ and then turn the ‘Fixed Output’ off by lowering it to 0. Should work then.

Just go into the audio output and change it from fixed volume to value of 0.

Thanks guys! I’m in a work meeting at the moment. Will report back shortly…

For anyone using a streamer or a transport updating to this new UI you need to change the i2s input configuration to inverted to be compatible with the MK1 if that’s your prior DAC.

Make sure you go into the system menu and update the FW to 208 also.

I have the same problem as @markus46. I had initially done the FPGA update by itself and it worked fine. I then realized I needed to update the firmware and that seemed to go fine too, except no sound and the volume was stuck on 2. I tried turning “fixed volume” to “off” (couldn’t adjust the volume with the remote) and also set it at fixed 100 but no sound. I tried going back to 1.9.8 but no difference, the same for then going back to 2.5.0.

Any other ideas? @tedsmith or anyone else.

Edit–I just discovered that “max volume” was also set to zero. That fixed it.**

I think you can change the fixed volume to some non-zero value. Then change the max volume to some non-zero value and then change the volume to some non-zero value. After that you should be fine to set them how you want them. (Or something like that. I’m going from memory of getting trapped myself.)

Not sure about any one else however I am totally thrilled with what Ted and PS Audio have accomplished in this update.
To all the ones involved in this. Thank you. Great job.

I would try power cycle from the back switch.

Thanks Ted and Jeff. Turning “fixed volume” to “off” and “max volume” to 100 did the trick. I had never touched either setting in the past as I use my preamp to control volume. No idea why the updates changed these settings. Gremlins.

Oh happy cake day Vince, this forum wouldn’t be the same without you!

I had the honor of being one of several beta guinea pigs for Ted’s workthroughs with some of the tick/pop issues in the fpga. It was a pleasure working with Ted, and I couldn’t be happier with his work to rid my ears of those annoyances. Thanks again Ted!

Just kidding. It’s always a pleasure working with Ted.

Being pedantic: If it’s not obvious or you are as literal minded as me: Now all of the beta testers can say what they want about being a beta tester for this release.

I had the same issue, volume at 2 after updating. It took me a bit to find the Fixed Volume setting since I had not changed that either. Another thing I’ll mention is that when I update the firmware in order to the update FPGA I not only have to power cycle I have to remove the USB drive and then power cycle and put it back in to get anything to show in the update FPGA window. It was the same when updating firmware to 2.3.5.

All in all I am very happy with MK2 and Ted’s support.

@tedsmith or @Elk - not sure if you guys can help with this observation but @jamesh is out-of-pocket at Axpona. The Firmware Archives download area for the DSD MK II v2.3.3 and v2.3.6 are not as advertised. Both contain old “DSD-Windom-for Windows.zip” files. In the event someone needs/wants to roll back to an earlier version, it would be helpful to have the correct zip files available. Thanks!
