First music of the day

After returning from her rowing workout my wife being a fan of all things John Rutter slipped this one on the CD spinner. I could not have selected better.

Another cold morning. Had a water filtration unit (Kinetico) installed last evening which made the wife happy–in her opinion the new kitchen is finally complete. So is my mad money for next year. I’m glad she is happy with it. Will make for a nice weekend.

Starting this first session with:
Horace Silver “Blowin’ the Blues Away” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary SHM-SACD

I wish it was just that easy, that one could blow the blues away.

Sounds great.

Continuing this first session with

Andrew Hill “Dusk” Palmetto cd

One of my favorite later Hill works.

The purity of virgin snow sweeping across the landscape, matched only by the playing of Isabelle Faust.

About an inch of snow on the ground, cold, still morning. The snow plow coming through woke Lucinda up. . . but she is lying down again and I am listening to disc I of a box set that arrived too late last night to listen to.

I have long loved this material, there is very little that is new here for me BUT I had to have it and the sound is marvelous! The original recordings of this material are stellar (one microphone so well balanced!) and the playing has that relaxed and groovy swing that just is so satisfying.

“Classic Vanguard Small Group Swing Sessions” Mosaic Records 8 cd box set, disc 1

Closing up this first session with. . .

Grant Green “Feelin’ the Spirit” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary SHM-SACD

Wow. This one really shines in the SHM-SACD version. The detail on Billy Higgin’s drums draws one in. . .the clave and rim shot strokes so delicately presented, the dynamics from gentle to harder strikes so clear. And Hancock’s piano (one of my favorite of his performances ever) is placed just right in the center and so well captured. Just a delight to listen to.

Fans of Jimi Hendrix are sure to appreciate this latest RSD Black Friday Band of Gypsies release. Jimi Hendrix: Hendrix - Songs for Groovy Children.
I should add my thanks to mycrowave for the nudge, as I had passed on this during the RSD BF event, and subsequently picked up a copy.

I have the cd box set, and the SACD since their release five years ago. A fantastic release!

The snow stopped before dusk yesterday, but it’s cold! Hope the snow stays so that Lucinda’s great niece and nephew can throw it around when they arrive from Austin on Tuesday.

Starting off with
Harold Land “A New Shade of Blue” Mainstream/Solid Records Japan cd

All Land/Hutcherson sessions are great!

Finishing up this first session of the day with

Bobby Hutcherson “San Francisco” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary SHM-SACD

These new Kevin Gray mastered SHM-SACD sound wonderful.

You’re a bad influence, Lon. I’m thinking that maybe I need to buy another CD transport.

So sorry. Every house should have one though!

Just don’t chase SACD. My Jays CDT3 Mk3 is coming into its own after the first week, and while not a side by side comparison it betters the CDT2 Mk3 in detail retrieval, bottom end, and a sense of space in my listening room. Clearly edges out the PST as well. The PST and CDT2 Mk3 seemed to be voiced similarly.

I love Rutter. We got to hear his requiem performed a few years ago in a local church with great acoustics. Quite an experience. Your wife’s choice of the carol album was great - some good friends gave us that CD a few years back. It gets pulled out several times each Christmas season.

The out-of-towners have arrived at my sister-in-laws earlier than we expected–the Texas youngsters will get to revel in the snow before it disappears and we’ll be seeing them later today. A better day ahead than expected!

Starting out with the third disc from this exciting new set.

“Classic Vanguard Small Group Swing Sessions” Mosaic Records 8 cd box set, disc 3

Sir Charles Thompson groups and a Joe Newman session.

Wow!

Next up
Ornette Coleman “New York is Now” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

Sounds good! Been a while since I spun this session.

A warm morning! Snow will be melting. At least the Texan kiddos who arrived yesterday will have another morning of snow fun.

Starting off with
Dave Brubeck Quartet “Concord on a Summer Night” Concord Records cd

Clarinet – Bill Smith
Drums – Randy Jones
Guitar, Bass Trombone, Electric Bass – Chris Brubeck
Piano – Dave Brubeck

Recorded at the Concord Pavilion, on August 8th, 1982

I’m enjoying hearing Bill Smith with Dave Brubeck again, and Chris Brubeck is “on.”

Following this up with

SOMETHING ELSE! featuring Vincent Herring “Soul Jazz” Smoke Sessions cd

A recommendation from another board that paid off.

This thread has a decided jazz slant, which is great, but this morning my first listen is Lapdog, a short-lived side project from 3 members of Toad the Wet Sprocket that formed in the early 2000s, about the time that band first split up. It consisted of Todd Nichols, Dean Dinning and Randy Gus, lacking only Toad’s front man Glenn Phillips. Lapdog put out two CDs of straight-ahead alt rock and then called it quits (though there’s talk of a new album in the works).

Craig it seems mostly jazz listening going on early . . . you’re adding some diversity. In my case, jazz listening is more than 95% of my listening, probably closer to 98%. I caught the bug in the 'seventies and it has just grown and grown to a Kafkaesque size. I hardly listen to anything else, Brazilian music is probably next and then some musical icons of my youth I still follow such as Jimi, Dylan, a few others.

Happy holidays everyone!

Right now, a quiet and cold morning out by the woods. Just heard turkeys across the road in the forst, and saw three young deer in our driveway.

Starting off with:

“Classic Vanguard Small Group Swing Sessions” Mosaic Records, disc IV

Wonderful Buck Clayton led material. Wow, the sound of that hall!
