First music of the day

Lon–if you don’t have this, I think you’d like it.

Well I’ve always loved these two albums (more than the much-lauded live material) and there are tracks here–seventeen iirc– never released before that I am finding worth hearing (and repeatedly I believe). Plus. . . the Plangent Process is used here and adds a subtle improvement to the sound.

This one is a hit with me. It was worth the wait I have had since I pre-ordered it the first day possible.

I’ve had that on SACD since it was first released.

To be honest. . . meh. It is not a favorite of mine from these guys, and the Telarc jazz sound style really hasn’t ever done much for me.

A nice morning start with Andras Schiff’s interpretations of The Goldberg Variations.

That wakes me up often. It’s wonderful.

A tiny bit warmer this morning. It’s the time of year when a tiny bit is a bit bigger than months previous.

Starting off the day with

“Roxy Coss” self-titled, self-released cd

This is my second copy as my first copy had a bad skip in the final track, and a visible scuff. So far this copy is perfectly fine; I really do like the music of Ms Coss.

On to disc 3 of this excellent new reissue of two Bill Evans albums and many alternates/outtakes.

“Haunted Heart: The Legendary Riverside Studio Recordings”

Nice local weather mandated an extended morning hike displacing a first listen to mid-afternoon. What better than this most excellent nod to John Coltrane, Carlos Santana John McLaughlin Love Devotion Surrender my original Columbia gatefold LP.

Colder still this morning. Family on Lucinda’s side from Austin are in town so I’m looking forward to a nice dinner. . . that I won’t have to cook.

Starting off with a disc that arrived in the mail last night: Jonathan Blake “My Life Matters” Blue Note cd

Different from this great drummer’s last release, but I’m enjoying it.

A brief morning session with Yo La Tengo This Stupid World before I venture out for some yard work. Rain Tuesday followed by a significant temperature decline on Wednesday

Woke up early and couldn’t go back to sleep so I’ve decided to spin a disc after watching a little bit from the DVR on headphones..

I’ve chosen Charles Lloyd Trio “Ocean” on Blue Note cd. A good late night/early morning vibe. Sounding so good on the system as it warms up!

Then on to

I read some remarks about this release elsewhere and hadn’t heard it in a LONG time so decided to spin this Atlantic cd edition:

Yes “Tormato”

This morning I’m in the mood for some mid-sixtes psychedelic-folk, and Tim Buckley Goodbye and Hello satisfies.

A quick heavy rainstorm came and went. I sprinted home from a walk!

Now

Enjoying another album by Roxy Coss, “The Future is Female” on Posi-tone cd

Bass – Rick Rosato
Bass Clarinet – Lucas Pino
Drums – Jimmy Macbride
Guitar – Alex Wintz
Piano – Miki Yamanaka
Saxophone, Bass Clarinet – Roxy Coss

Now on to

Billie Holiday, “Masters of Jazz Vol. 3” Storyville cd

Been too long since I listened to some Billie.

I had wanted to listen to Keith Jarret Koln Concert this morning and forgot that I had relocated all of my KJ LPs to our seasonal home as part of an ongoing consolidation. Mixed in with my Mosaic LPs was Keith Jarrett Sun Bear Concerts, a 1978 ECM ten LP set. As I tend to listen to box sets lessthan sinle or double LP sets this has not had a listen for some time. Happily listening to Kyoto, November 5, 1976. This set is a fine example of Keith’s improvisational genius. Much more layering and emotional depth than Koln Concert.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans here. Hope everyone is where they want to be and safe.

Going to have to do a little shoveling and clearing soon but just got some time to sit and listen and I’m going to take advantage of it. The system sounds so amazing. . . .

Listening to “Somethin’ Else” the lone Blue Note title by Cannonball Adderley for Blue Note records, this time listening to the 85th Anniversary UHQCD from Japan. (It sounds GREAT).

This is a fascinating release. Miles is sort of in charge, sort of not, Hank Jones is an amazing accompanist here and interesting soloist, and Art Blakey’s performance here is one of my favorites as far as taste and structural groove. I wonder who was responsible for the arrangements here. This time through I wonder if there was any Gil Evans input, a few points sound to me a little like his work. Anyway, a great album that is hard bop but also swings in a mainstream way, and just pulls one in and keeps one there all the way through.

On to another Blue Note, this time a 24 Bit by RVG Japanese LP facsimile release of Kenny Burrell’s “Blue Lights Vol. 2” from Blue Note Japan. I really like the sound of most 24 Bit by RVG discs. And the music here is excellent!

Up early as Lucinda has an early PT appointment and I’ll soon have to shovel and clear some snow. But first a little listening.

Well it’s cold but we dodged a bullet and didn’t get snow overnight that was predicted, so I just cleaned up the car a bit in preparation for a brunch with Texas in-laws that are here for just one more day.

Revisiting disc 2 of this excellent new reissue of two Bill Evans albums and many alternates/outtakes. God bless the Plangent Process–I did a brief comparison with an SACD of one of these albums and there’s a subtle improvement in stability and spaciousness on this new release.

I’m following up with a bit of never before heard by me Yes from the expanded reissue cd of “Tormato.” Yes is one of the few rock bands I still give a listen to, and I never realized until last week that they had included nearly another album of never before released material on this “Tormato” reissue. Nice stuff! I’m excited about the big deluxe edition of “Tales From Topographic Oceans” coming next year–that is my favorite Yes release.

And cover art by Andy Warhol. Well, even Andy admits he’s not a good painter.
