First music of the day

Care to share with us what is it about the music that pleases you so/ Furthermore does the MoFi edition improve on other releases you are familiar with and if so in what way(s).

Thanks guys. I stuffed myself with cake.

A cold, clear morning. So quiet. . . the few around us are not going off to work this morning.

Decided to play one of the Goodman discs that I pulled out last week to listen to, Benny Goodman “The Complete 1937 Madhattan Room Boraodcasts, Volume 1” on Viper’s Nest cd

This was quite a band!

I love Benny Goodman. Memories coming flooding back of a happy, music loving father who gave me this gift of music and hifi sound.

Nothing really deep at play, just had an enjoyable time listening. I like the extended arraignments and the groups connection with the audience

This is the only vinyl version I have heard. I do have it in cd, a 90’s re-issue, that I have ripped to my server. The MoFi pressing has a very likable intimacy and it very well done, in general. Clean, clear and dynamic

Yes, I first heard him via my parents as well, but I confess my estimation of him was raised when he gave a speech and recital while I was attending the University of Chicago. Even 36 years after these recordings he was very impressive.

Couldn’t sleep any longer. Thinking about the journey to Lucinda’s surgical follow up this morning had me tossing and turning a bit. It’s cold out there!

Starting off the day with a favorite that captured me the day it was released so many years ago.

Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette “Stil Live” 2 cd ECM set, disc 2

Now on to this classic, in mono form.

Herbie Hancock “Maiden Voyage” Blue Note Japan Platinum SHM-CD

Off to a local oyster bar for b-day celebration #2. This should put me in the mood, Patti Smith Horses. I still recall Patti’s killer SNL performance from days long gone by.

It’s really cold out there. Should be above freezing tomorrow, which will help me with patches of ice on the deck and driveway.

Starting off with Out Of/Into “Motion II” Blue Note cd

So glad this new “supergroup” have released a second. And it’s very good!

Pianist Gerald Clayton, alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, vibraphonist Joel Ross, drummer Kendrick Scott, and bassist Matt Brewer

And now, I was thinking of my Dad and decided to hear something he would spin.

My family rarely played any secular Xmas music when we were growing up, as a minister and a classical music lover he just didn’t want to hear that stuff. THIS was his Christmas go to . . . and I decided to listen to disc 1 of my cd copy this morning.

Handel, Leonard Bernstein, The New York Philharmonic “Messiah” Sony Classical 2 cd set

I love this album. Swing IS the thing.
A great band with one of my favorite trumpet players, Roy Eldridge.

As I continue to work through my Record Store Day acquisitions Yusef Lateef Golden Flower Live in Sweden stands out. The recording quality is consistently good. Yusef is on top of his game with two strong supporting rhythm sections, Kenny Barron, Lars Sjosten, Albert Tootie Heath, Palle Danielson, and Bob Cunningham. That said, I still have the Albert Ayler/Don Cherry box and Bill Evans Portraits at the Penthouse to listen to.

Starting off a snowy morning with a cd that I used to play to death but have neglected for a few years.

It’s the amazing 1960 band of Charles Mingus with Bud Powell sitting in for one piece. Hard to top the ensemble and the compositions really allow for the incredible stretched out performances.

Charles Mingus “Mingus at Antibes” Atlantic cd

Charles Mingus – bass, piano
Ted Curson – trumpet
Eric Dolphy – alto saxophone, bass clarinet
Booker Ervin – tenor saxophone
Dannie Richmond – drums
Bud Powell – piano “I’ll Remember April”

Recorded 13 July 1960, Antibes, France

This fine example of Third Stream Jazz being George Russell The Outer View originally released by Riverside in 1962. A lot may be gleaned from this set including influence on early Carla Bley and Michael Mantler; the pair choose to take things further out with their magnum opus Escalator Over the Hill.

I should note this LP includes Shelia Jordan’s recording debut, a very young Don Ellis, Pete LaRoca, Steve Swallow who eventually pairs up with Carla Bley, Paul Plummer and Garnett Brown.

More snow, and our furnace is acting funky; beyond my ability to solve though I’ve kept it going with frequent visits to the root cellar. Waiting on a service call back.

Continuing on with my Yes re-visit with “Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe”

Revisiting Out Of/Into “Motion II” Blue Note cd

So glad this new “supergroup” have released a second. And it’s very good!

Thelonious Monk “Bremen 1965” Sunnyside 2 cd set, disc 1

It’s cold. Going to be cold til late Monday when our new furnace should be installed. And lots of snow too. Oh joy.

Sneaking in a little music before I have to deal with my wife’s increasing anxiety again.

Got this new release in yesterday and it is in EXCELLENT (mono) sound.

Thelonious Monk “Bremen 1965” Sunnyside 2 cd set, disc 1

Good performances too.

Thanks for the concern. Physically better. PT has helped and she got a really good review by the surgeon. She’s driving again and having many hours without the brace.

Emotionally. . . getting better as well, though a bit behind the physical. Some progress was diverted when our furnace failed yesterday and anxiety about the state of our pipes etc. (not unwarranted, but over-cooked) took over . . . . I think we’ll be find til Monday when a new one is installed and I’ll barely survive the fiscal drain. Luckily we have power, which means we can run electric space heaters that we couldn’t run the times we had no heat for over a week (three times in the last five years). We’re “acclimated” to these situations and we’ll get through.

Good progress, but still stressful.

Thanks for the report.
