First music of the day

A first of 2026 listen this most intriguing piano duet recorded at the Maybeck Recital Hall, within the Kennedy-Nixon House paneled in redwood heartwood explaining is welcoming warm tone. This recording is solo and duo piano performaces by Satoko Fujii and Myra Melford. Nice to hear the contrasting improvisational styles of both pianists. This being a September 2009 limited edition recording released on Satoko’s Libra Recordings label. It is a most fine recording and performance.

Based on your posting I gave this record a serious listen. I like it but I kept looking for the inventive modal piano that Bill Evans was known for.

COLD. Thank goodness for that new furnace, despite the fact that it has caused me a financial tizzy!

I have neglected listening to Cannonball too long, going to make up for that this morning!

Cannonball Adderley Quintet “Cannonball Adderley Collection Volume 7: Cannonball Live in Europe” landmark cd

This was quite a band!

JULIAN CANNONBALL ADDERLEY alto sax
NAT ADDERLEY cornet
YUSEF LATEEF tenor sax & flute & oboe
JOE ZAWINUL piano
SAM JONES bass
LOUIS HAYES drums

It’s going to be a bit on the warmer side today, up to 40 degrees, the high from yesterday. Still feels cold . . . I’m thinking of a sweater! (Not something I normally wear).

Starting off with the warm Brazilian sound of “Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum”–graceful, expertly played Jobim music by his son and some of his favorite band mates.

Followed by a recording with another favorite vocalist, very different. . . .

Betty Carter “The Music Never Stops” Blue Engine Records cd

Part of the Lincoln Jazz Center sereis of concerts this showcases Betty’s amazing skills as a vocalist.

Unfortunately other than doing a bit of isolation component shifting I didn’t get to spend time with the system yesterday. I missed it! I hope to get a little time in today. Everything changes when I don’t listen to enough music.

Starting off a cold morning with “Hal Wilner Presents Weird Nightmare–Meditations on Mingus.” This recording has fascinated me for decades with its use of instruments developed by Hary Partch. A very interesting release–and I love the Mingus music at its core.

Now playing “Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto–Live at the Berlin Jazz Fesitval 1966” The Lost Recordings 2 cd set, disc 1

This edition of the Getz group with Gary Burton swings hard!

Free Hoops featuring a rather muscular Sylvie Courvoisier Trio with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Creative music with a sense of space and driving rhythm.

Chilly rain. . . this will demolish what remains of the recent 13" plus of snow we had. Warm for January this morning, with a cooler front moving in this afternoon.

I decided to start the day with a Miles Davis bootleg–Miles Davis “Howlin’–Kyoto, July 15, 1964” EGHO cd. Not perfect sound, but decent, and Sam Rivers on tenor for one of his few recorded gigs with the Quintet. Interestingly this concert was recorded outside in the rain. . . so the slightly intrusive sound of the rain here, now, is appropriate.

Not only does Hugh Ragin’s Revelation offer fine sonics it is a killer performance that features Assif Tsahar, William Parker and Hamid Drake.

Followed by MIles Davis The Lost Quintet. The Lost Quintet being Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Chick Corea, and Wayne Shorter. Recorded live at De Doelen, Rotterdam, Netherlands, 9th November 1969.

About two inches of snow overnight. Did my little bit of shoveling for now; snow is starting up again.

Starting off with

Bill Evans Trio “On a Friday Evening” Craft cd

Two great things about this release: Plangent Process applied, and mastering by Paul Blackmore. Nicely engineered performances.

Next. . . .

Duke Ellington – “Duke 56/62” Vol. 1 2 LP CBS France, LP 2

This is great music. Sounding so good this morning.

I looked out the window and was releived to see no new snow. I didn’t want to have to shovel more soon.

For some reason I wanted to hear vibes this monring and so I pulled this record from the shelf.

“Terry Gibgs” Mercury mono LP. Terry Pollard really delivers.

Now onto the Tower SACD edition of Miles Davis “Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel” disc 4

I didn’t have my laptop with me when I did my morning listening session–I started off with the 2 cd Japanese bootleg “John Coltrante–Creation”, . . then moved on to Duke Ellington “Jazz Party in Stereo” Mobile Fidelity gold cd, then on to Dizzy Reece “Comin’ On” Blue Note Connoisseur cd.

Now, hours later

Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra “Handful of Keys”

This is one of their good ones.

It got colder overnight but so far no snow! I’m glad, my back may or may not get another day of rest and a respite from shoveling!

Starting off the day with a soothing listen to Eliane Elias “Dreamer” Bluebird cd. Hard to believe this was recorded over 20 years ago. . . .

Paulo Braga on drums really gives this one his special “feel.”

On to

Duke Ellington and his Orchestra “Duke '56/'62 Volume 2” 2 LP Columbia, LP 1

Satisfying my itch to hear the Duke and his expensive gentlemen.
