First music of the day

Paul Motian on Broadway - Vol. 1, with a stand-out quartet comprised of Joe Lovano, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, and Paul Motian. Basically a set of 1930’s and 40’s Broadway show tunes. Frisell adds some exceptional color to the pieces, and on Liza Lovano injects a bit of fire on this fine sounding German pressing.

I forgot how interesting this album is. Poindexter and Ervin are great front line sharers here, and my one complaint is that Al Gray is not on every track on this disc.

This edition from Japan does not have the extra material on the US cd (which was not part of this session).

I don’t have too much Fats outside of the Clark Boland Big Band and small group sides, so this is a welcome compilation.

I guess you should enjoy solo, barely amplified, very acoustic sounding guitar. Or true virtuosity where a musician masters their instrument.
Joe had a perfectly accurate metronome in his head. Amazing.

My local source for all things (LPs) Mofi and UHQR suggested the UHQR version of Pretzel Logic, a personal favorite from the Steely Dan catalog. Based on Micheal Fremmer’s review and subsequent comments I took a pass on this one. What I understand is the UHQR Pretzel Logic top end is rolled off, upper bas a bit bloated, and presence region forward. Considering the price, $125 net to me I took a pass. Any one have expeience with the LP UHQR? I do have the Can’t Buy a Thrill and Aja, but have yet to spin either as my VPI 3D tone arm dual pivot mod needs adjustment. Just not been motivated to mess with it.

My wife requested this first thing this morning being big on the Episcopalian Christmas tradition.

Jack McDuff (featuring Kenny Burrell) “Crash” Prestige compilation cd

Starting a cold Xmas morning off with some hard swing. Kenny is such a master!

Wishing holiday cheer for those that observe Chanukah, Christmas, and Kwanza. A bit of Matt Wilson Tree-O covering a handful of Christmas standards.

Starting off the day with Pops. His positive vibe is always welcome. You Know Who’s vocals are so well-recorded here. . . and everyone is dishing it out.

The Very Best of Chris Botti (Roon/Qobuz)

Wrapping up a Mars Williams an Ayler Xmas listening session with the above CD.

My wife’s niece and her husband and her darling boy and girl are in town for a week plus from Austin and we spent the day with them. . . we may spend almost every day with them as the kids love my wife so and they are real corkers.

But this morning is colder and raining and Brazilian music seemed a good start to the day–and Jaoa Bosco’s happy and warm music seemed just the right fit.

Funking things up this AM with Herbie Hancock’s Sextant. I like what Dr Patrick Gleeson’s Arp 2600 synthesizer brings to the mix.

One of my favorite outfits of the SFJazz Collective, and a great release. (Though I like nearlly all the releases very much).

What an artist Carmen was! A storyteller and approached some singing as if she were an instrumentalist. I always get a smile listening to her.

Albare can really play.

Fourth day with in-laws from Austin yesterday, a lot of fun with the two youngsters. Glad to be sitting in front of the stereo!

A very pretty album for a rainy cold winter morning.

Authentic Brazilian vibe with Helio Alves, Joyce and her husband Tutty Moreno on board.

“Classic Don Byas Sessions 1944-1946” Mosaic Records, disc 2

Yet another excellent Mosaic box set. Byas deserves this deluxe treatment and there is a great trove of previously unreleased material here.
