First listen for this Monday morning is a rather introspective performance captured recently at Chicago’s Elastic Arts. Picked up this CD Two or Three when I saw Mars in August 2023.
The Amalgam label has a number of intriguing releases…I will need to do some research…thanks for the mention.
Starting a cold rainy morning off with another Renee Rosnes, “Written in the Rocks,” a very tightly arranged outing with stellar playing.
Then onward to a beautiful disc in all ways. It’s too rare when the compositions and arrangements and performances are of such high order and woven together so intelligently with excellent engineering. This recording of strings is exceptionally rendered. I enjoy this as deeply as I learned to love two others of hers.
Magos Herrera “Aire”
Followed by
Jordi Savall “Marin Marais–Pieces de Violl des Cinques Livres” SACD 4
As the snowpocalypse is upon us I’m homebound for the day. First up is the 1978 Polydor Corea/Hancock An Evening With Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. Herbie on my left, Chick on my right. A fantastic acoustic piano pairing in response to critical response concerning the pair’s electronic offerings. I find this to be exceptional, other than side 4 at 35 minutes on the Columbia LP, and thus compressed significantly to accommodate a single side playback. The CD version is heavily edited, but Maiden Voyage/Fiesta are not severley compressed. Nice to have options.
Vilhelm Bromander In this forever unfolding moment, I can’t take full credit for discovering this fine 2023 release from Swedish double bassist Vilhelm Bromander as it was recently suggested to me by Peter Margasak. With a bit of a Pharoah Sanders/Alice Coltrane vibe, mixed in with Don Cherry/Charlie Haden and bassist Joshua Abrams. A nice stew indeed, and worth seeking out.
This was a fun release. The past entries in this series were good as well. Here’s hoping perhaps there will be more.
Donald Byrd “Live at Montreux” Blue Note cd
I goosed the heat a bit to take the chill out of the air. Glad there is still some snow on the trees. Even colder temperature ahead . . . I can take it, the system sounds best when it’s cold.
@lonson, A great way to kick off one’s day. AN inspiration for my first listen.
Now playing Count Basie and his Orchestra “Live in Japan '78” Pablo cd (France)
Was playing Miles Davis “Seven Steps to Heaven” Mobile Fidelity SACD
An excellent series of multi-disc volumes from Sweden. I have them all, they are all great listens.
Svensk Jazz Historia “Watch Out! Swedish Jazz Volume 10, 1965-1969,” Caprice Records, disc 3
Man is it cold here! It plunged down to -12F. -24.4C, and continues to drop!
Rachel Podger’s interpretation seems to be doing a fine job of warming me up.
“The Complete April 1957 Riverside Recordings of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane” disc 2
The remastering on this set is wonderful. And the music . . .keep revealing details to me listening after listening.
Geri Allen Flying Toward the Sound, A Solo Piano Excursion Influenced by Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, and Herbie Hancock, where Geri reflects upon the spirit of the aforementioned pianists. A most wonderful and accessible listen.
In addition to the CD set you referred to I also have the 2017 triple LP reissue on theCraft label. I bring it up as it is a wonderful sounding LP release of an important series of performances, and those with turntable may wish to pursue the LP version.
