Good points under normal circumstances. This situation feels like trying to push start a car while the driver has his foot on the break.
How much have you experimented with speaker placement and adjusting toe in?
If the speakers are too bright try zero toe in to help tame the high end.
In the current financial environment inventory is going to be an issue at most all audio stores save for a very few. Those that do have inventory are not likely to accept a trade-in on a speaker in the Focaā's price range unless you buy a speaker costing even more. That kind of leaves you with TMR as the most likely alternative and as they are a Focal dealer what they offer in trade is going to be what you think is below acceptable. More information about where you actually do live and your room size and environment might get you more helpful suggestions if you want them. My first thought having owned the BHK pair for several years would be to find another preamp with a warmer classic tube sound. I tried well over a dozen different brands of tubes in the BHK preamp in the five years I owned it and no matter what it still tends more to neutral than ātubeā sounding. Next would be a different stand alone DAC with a different warmer tone. Something as inexpensive as the Laiv dDAC will take you in that direction. You complained about the brightness of the B&Wās for years so donāt know how going back to them will solve anything.
Brake. Lol
Give us a break for break in its proper context. @elk can we end this thread already? Lol
I would see what TMR has to offer. Add some $$$ to that and see if you can unload local. If you have the boxes etc, and if they are a good price MINT cond as they probably are, someone will scoop them up for quite a bit more than TMR..probably the amount a good DAC would cost.
YEP! break was a Freudian slip
Have you considered EQ? Schiitās top model is useful. I use a Decware ZROCK3 which I think would be excellent but the lead time is six months or more, which I am sure would be untenable.
Pretty sure Bacch4Mac would be a solution, if you really want one other than completely getting out⦠have just sold my Dynaudios in prep for a Bacch4Mac purchase and will use my āBā system speakers with that⦠all good audiophiles know you gotta spend more to save more! (thatās tongue in cheek) ![]()
p.s. my end game speakers are fr20 but we are downsizing and not sure listening room will be big enoughā¦
Thereās a piece of interpersonal advice often directed at the male half of a couple, and that is, you need to be clear on whether your partner is looking for solutions or sympathy and act accordingly.
It wouldnāt seem that the OP here is actually looking for solutionsā¦
Itās not always about the nailā¦
And another thing: Mayhaps your Focals need different room treatments than your old B&Ws.
Interesting to hear that OP said there was no difference at all after 200 hours of break in on the pair. It is clear to me he really dislikes this pair then. Well, sell it at a great loss is a solution; maybe even the best one.
It is very possible for him to spend a lot more on other gears plus treatments and still does not like it at the end. From reading the title of the thread, I think he made up his mind mostly, and hearing no difference afterward cemented it more.
Speaker is the most important component in any system. If you cannot live with it then you canāt.
In a row? Listener fatigue. Or did you mean something else?
??, not sure what youāre referring to, I got lost in the thread.
wow, sounds like a great deal. Wish I knew what they sounded like.
based on your previous experience, it seems only an in home audition would be appropriateā¦
iāll have to see how much shipping is both ways, just in case. Iām on the east coast.
I keep hearing that the FR20ās donāt sound like other box speakers. Can anyone fill me in on what exactly that means, say compared to the 802Ds or the Scala Evos?
Before you take anyoneās opinion, remember that Focal is a highly regarded, very successful company. There is an entire marketplace of happy, enthusiastic Focal owners.
