FPGA improvements in Redcloud

need to mention that the pops / crackle only happens with DSD/DOP. All other sampling rates are ok.

todd, the bridge was never capable of playing 128 DSD . . .

No kidding?

I recently switched from an Auralic Aries with a USB output to the Bridge II, so I guess that would explain why I was expecting these files to play.

That is exactly how it is. Aries is able to feed 128 DSD and the DS can play it. However bridge II can only feed 64 DSD. Bride III may be able to feed 128 DSD but this is the future. I also had a few albums in DSD 128 and I had to convert them to DSD 64 to play them through the bridge.

Need help - been trying to install Redcloud all weekend w/o success. Tried 3 diff flash drives on my DSjr, sometimes the logo flashes for a while and sometimes it just boots to Huron (was purchased with Huron loaded, so going back prior to this version doesn’t seem to be an option). Also been power cycling more times than I can recall.

It’s completely fine to go back to earlier releases, in fact when you’re stuck between two releases you may need to go to another release that’s earlier than both of them. Check that the update files are all in the root of the USB stick.

Ted - thank you so much for your instant reply and great advice. Loaded Yale first and then was able to load Redcloud. Enjoying great sound now —thanks again!

Same here: pops and crackle on all DSD files, whether from usb, bridge 2, or even sacds on the dmp through i2s. Other than that, glorious sound with Redcloud!! And no problem with pcm data.

Anyone else getting this noise on dsd files?

Phil

Do DSD files sound right if you turn the volume down a little?

Hi Ted.

Before anything else, many thanks for the wonderful Redcloud upgrade!

I used to turn the attenuator on, with dsd volume at 100 and my preamp around 12 o’clock (lots of gain and 90 dB sensitive speakers).

I now turn off the attenuator, with dsd volume at 60, and preamp at 12, which sounds better in my system. This also lowers the clicking noise on sacds on i2s (with the dmp), but not for dsd files on usb or bridge2.

Still without attenuator, I tried the dsd volume at 40, increasing the preamp volume level. I may get a bit less clicking (not dramatically, though), but the sound quality also seems to suffer a bit. I stopped listening to dsd files (the clicks are too distracting and I don’t want to damage my speakers).

By the way, my psa dealer was able to replicate the clicks on sacds from the dmp, with the attenuator on. And the clicks even happen when you pause or stop.

But only on dsd. Pcm sounds glorious.

Ah, perhaps I misunderstood your original post. Are you talking about continuous clicks and pop during all DSD or a click/pop in between each DSD track?

Continuous clicks and pops during all dsd.

Have you tried reloading Torreys and then Redcloud again?

Yes, I have, to no avail unfortunately.

Hi Ted,

I, too, experience intermittent clicks & pops just like static … Really bad on the ā€˜Eleanor McEvoy’ SACD ā€˜Out There’ … Playing the same disc on my DS 2 with Huron there is no extraneous clicks or pops other than the clicks when it changes from PCM to DSD… I find if there isn’t much happening in the music, i.e. just the singer and simple backing it’s fine but as soon as the music kicks into gear the clicks and pops appear in transient bursts like it’s a damaged LP that’s playing… I also experience this with a few other SACD’s …?

Dirk - do you get the same behavior with the volume turned down a little, say to 90 or below?

Just to offer some counterbalance, I used to have clicks when switching resolutions - particularly (or maybe only) between DSD and PCM. Minor annoyance, at worst.

Since Redcloud, none.

Just tried a few things… All clicks and pops absent with the volume on the DS set at 85… ā€˜DMP / DS / BHK Pre’. Definitely sounds better with DS at 85 and at any setting on the BHK… I usually listen 100 on the DS and around 30-50 on the BHK depending on the material played… Switching back and forth between my two DS boxes: DS1 Redcloud and DS2 Huron all seems fine with Huron at any volume setting ! Cheers.

Good to hear you have a work around.

I’m playing DSD version of Out There by Eleanor McEvoy on Redcloud with no clicks or pops. I’m playing from a Melco server to DS vis Bridge 2, controlled via MControl. Cheers, Mike.

Hi Ted,

First of all, I want to say that I am mostly verry happy with redcloud  (soundwise) (DSJ).

Except for playing DSD files. I also experience clicks and pops during playback and when DSD files are started.

What I did to solve it:
  1. Today went back to Torreys (via Yale because Torreys did not work straight away). Result still clicks and pops.
  2. Volume reduced in steps to 75 (will try 70 later). Result clicks and pops almost disappeared but not quite yet.
No problems with Huron. With Torreys also clicks and pops.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Hans

And I hope you’ll all have a wonderfull 2018
