FR 30 in da house

Octave recording has continued surprises me. The latest releases are better sounding than the earlier ones. The Masters 3 was great, the 4 is even better, and the Scabaret is absolutely amazing playing through PST!

I really like the sound, but in my listening chair (or the one you sat in), I’m probably out in 10 minutes.

Has the video of Paul and Chris’s visit posted yet? Enjoy!

The videos are on YouTube.

Welcome to the Forum!

They…are…gorgeous! What strikes me, is that they don’t dominate the room, size-wise, like a pair of the big Wilsons or like my Maggie Tympany 1As did. It wouldn’t surprise me if the FR30s became the standard in the industry, for a fairly reasonable price. tips my hat to Chris B.

Deeply impressed,

With their extreme glossy finish, they remind me of The Monolith. You just have to find a very good recording of the theme from 2001 to play on them, and let us know. Gives me goosebumps to think about it.

Jealously,

Thanks for your review. Love to hear less room treatment was needed. I am going to give up a pair of Maggie 20.7’s in a 17’x20’ room. From your experience appears they will be gone in April. I am using same stack as you with turntable also. Did Paul make any comment on how BHK600’s sound on FR30’s vs 300’s?

Regards…

Paul did not comment on the upcoming BHK 600’s but I do notice them in their listening room with the FR30’s.
I am sure that he will update features and improvements prior to their release. I am a recently retired residential builder but can usually muster up a decent floor plan and exterior. Yes, I agree that the FR30 is good looker, one of the best in class.

Q3, q5 or q7 audi or magico speaker?
f30 bmw or ps audio speaker?

The FR30s are enjoying the BHK600s. I have the only pair in the world (lucky me) and they are simply extraordinary. When the engineers come to haul them off or do work on them I am devastated.

A great review, albeit short.

Do we have any info yet on either how they are biased or design differences between the 600 and 300?

The major differences are the addition of a vacuum tube rectifier (as opposed to the solid state versions used in the 300s), a massively bigger power supply and companion increase in output MOSFETS, construction techniques required to beef up the supply. The circuitry and biasing schemes are the same. The sound is not.

Will they be built in house?

So vacuum tube rectifiers, an interesting choice. Which rectifiers did you land on?
Where are they sourced and are spares available with an initial BHK 600 purchase.

Will the rectifier tube be “hot” when the amp is in stand-by and only de-energized when the amp is fully shut down or will it be by-passed when the stand-by circuit is active? Just curious

They sure will be.

They will ship with JJ EZ81. The rectifier, similar to the input tubes, is de-energized when in standby to save tube life.

What are the advantages/benefits of tube rectification over solid state?

Or more specifically why did you choose to try vacuum tube rectification, and why stop there and not include vacuum tube regulation as well? I should add my back ordered Decware amplifier will have both, assuming I remain patient.
