Odd,I have Red fuses in both F1and F2 slots and sounds magnificent.
Since only one fuse is active, would you still recommend replacing both with the Red?

I couldn’t be sure so when I changed them a about two months ago didn’t know about that. Better safe than sorry. I didn’t want to open up and mess with it again. Left it as is.
I have just ordered ONE Synergistic Research Red Fuse for my PWD MKII. I already got one for my P10 and was blown away by the improvements. In MY system the P10 sounds just incomplete (lean, bass shy, “no” mids, compact 3D…) without the Red Fuse.
So, if only one fuse is active in the PWD, which one is it, the so called F1 slot?
According to the picture, the fuses are for the analog and a digital section:

Which fuse should I replace?
Thank you very much!
Only the F1 fuse for the digital section needs to be replaced.
Thanks,
one more questions: How can I make myself a ground strap (what material? What kind of “connector” to connect it to the the center lug of the AC?)? See step 4:

Thanks again!

Replace both of them.
The Direct Stream only has one power transformer. The PWD has two.
Damn Didn’t know that…so I have to order another fuse. Can anyone comment on the ground strap? And what about ground wire which (accordingly to the “How-to-section”) should be connected to the lid? In the “DirectStream Kit Installation” Video I can’ see, the lid being connected to some kind of ground wire…

Yes there is s green ground wire on the DS lid which attaches to the ground at the fuse board by the IEC inside the DS chassis.
Well I am in Germany and Radio Shack is completely unknown here But I think, I will get such an item at local stores.
I hate the process of changing the fuses in the PWD. Why didn’t PS Audio make it as easy as on the P10 :-)?
Hope, I get the “modification” done…I am no technician and completely talent free concerning those steps
What are your experiences of replacing the standard fuses with the “Red” in non PS Audio units, for example amplifiers? Is the effect comparable?

You might try Amazon Germany for the ground strap. I know that Amazon carries them.
Whether there is a ground wire to the lid depends on the vintage of the unit. My DS was upgraded from a very early PWD and has neither the ground wire nor the metal shielding the later units have.
To answer your question about why we never did make the fuses accessible from the rear I have two answers: I wish we had and we didn’t because we never considered this many people would want to change them. Hindsight’s everything.
Hi bene,
can you tell me if the 230V unit uses also 1A fuse or do they use 500mA?
Thanks a lot!
1A 5x20mm slow (träge)
Still totally blown away, what the Red made to my P10. Just one fuse totally transformed my system. Unbelievable!
oddeophile saidOdd...I am flummoxed, gobsmacked and, mostly, apologetic and appreciative. Thanks for your sharing and encouragement....you were right!!!!How many hrs do you have on it now?
I’ve noted over the weeks mine seems to get better and better. HT system powered by P10 with the Red fuse is getting really amazing as well.
Hang in there.
First, the DS finally smoothed out and began to sound like its former self…but now on steroids, so to speak. So, I then replaced the fuse in the Bryston BDP-2 with a Red SR (blew the first at 500ma and replaced with 800ma) and much more promptly, there was another positive “order of magnitude” change in every way. The most astonishing thing is how the organic, human, “here and now” quality that came to us with the DS is now even more pronounced and profound.
Odd, thanks Again (and to you, Elk, for running this great “show”) !!
John
John, I cannot tell you how many times over the years the same kind of thing’s happened to me and I’ve had to run for everybody to help on the forum as well. I am so happy for you this is fantastic!!! My experience exactly.
I think it takes longer for the DS to have the red fuse improved because of the lower amount of current. Just my guess. At any rate this is fantastic news. Enjoy!
Odd
Odd (and all),
At the risk of being off topic, after reading all the posts till now re: Pikes Peak, I am somewhat nervous because they are describing almost to a tee (both + (mostly, of course) and -) the sonic impacts of the SR Reds in my system…I think I am going to ignore Pikes Peak for the time being until the impacts of the Red’s are deeply complete. Possibly, too much of a good thing???..
John
Do one thing at a time. Let the fuses settle and get a handle on them. Then in a few weeks try Pikes. You can always reload 1.2.1 if you are concerned.
Odd
Fuses matter a lot, don’t skimp on them and try the newer ones like Audio Horizon Platinum Reference and Audio Magic Premier w Beewax. The effect is at least as strong as upgrading the power cord. AH fuse has a much better midrange and more natural (hard to image but IME true) than the already very good SR Red, which easily beats the older HiFi Tuning Supreme.
I’ve decided to give the SR Red fuse a try, based on the positive reports here. In fact, it’s on its way. Does anyone happen to know the size/pitch of the case screws? I’d just as soon not remove one to bring to the hardware store (and risk losing it) if I don’t have to. Also, if there is anything I need to be particularly careful about in opening the case and replacing the fuse besides what is in the DS kit video and previous posts in this thread, I’d be obliged if you let me know.
Thanks.
