Long shot here but. Has anyone had an experience comparing the GE T66 to the FR5? Seems a tad advantage for bass resonance in the T66. I own the T66 with a S/512 from REL. Powered by an NAD m23 amp With the FR5 on sale I’m curious
So I’m wondering if it would be an upgrade in sound stage?
Well, I would say that the FR5 would be more like the goldenear BRX. The FR5 has lower sensitivity but significantly deeper bass extension, significantly lower distortion and higher maximum output. Directivity above 6 kHz is wider.
A better comparison to the T66 would be our FR10 model.
I do think that soundstage and spatial qualities is a highlight of the speaker line.
Although I can’t comment on that GE model specifically, I have more experience with the other Tritons. I would easily pick the FR5 for overall sound stage quality.
Then sadly this order isn’t going to work for me Can we cancel it for now and I’ll save for the fr20 in the fall?
Thank you
Darren
Are you working with one of our sales team? I’m just in engineering and not aware of any pending orders etc.
Yes, Chris I was working with Taylor. He has canceled the order before it went out the door.
Thank you very much for getting back to me and being so upfront and honest greatly appreciated. Love the PS audio team has always.
I own the golden ear t66’s and I got to hear a set of fr5 recently at a friends place. It is not a fair fight in any way. The t66 is just way more grunt, it images better, the scale is bigger. The mtm configuration and the dsp with the built in subs is pretty amazing. The fr5 are great speakers. They punch way above their price, but so do the t66. At twice the price the t66 just a lot more speaker. Apples and oranges comparison. I have m1200’s powering my t66’s which is tremendous overkill. I’ve been working on the right input tubes to give me the exact sound I’m looking for. I’d say the fr10 is a better comparison. Like you, I’m considering the fr20/fr30 as my next big step up
I use the NAD M23 amp now, but was thinking m700 or m1200. I’m be a tube fan and love my BHK 300 pair. Did you go straight to the m1200 or upgrade from less amp? Curious since we have same towers.
I went to a galiontsa75 in between which was great. I’ve owned an m23. I’d say it is comparable w the 1200’s, the m1200’s just give you more. More headroom, more ability to tweak the sound. The m23 is ultra accurate, maybe too precise at points. The m1200’s take on the character of the preamp and tubes and cables
The M 23 is a great amp, but I find it just a tad two lean in the mid range Just a bit sterile
I actually jumped straight to the M1200s. Was running a tube preamp before, so I wanted that tube input stage without giving up the control and punch of Class D. With the same towers, you’ll definitely hear the difference, way more headroom, tighter bass, and smoother highs, especially if you’re already into the BHK sound. The M700s are good, but the M1200s just feel more effortless with demanding speakers.
My speakers a have built in sub amps and are 91 DB so they aren’t demaining at all.
