For me, the key part of that sentence is “once”.
“Once” I had a great shot.
“Once” I received the accolades of my friends.
“Once” is all that it ever was.

Are you good at parties, Rob? That’s a bit of a wet blanket statement.
I have three eagles, one hole in one, and many birdies, but one of my favorite personal stories is actually a par.
…hit an awful shot into the street from the tee, so had to re-tee. For people who know how to score correctly, that tee shot becomes my third shot. Anyway, hit the fairway, and then put it in the cup from the fairway on the par 4 (for a par). I had a feeling it would go in when it was at the apex of its trajectory in the sky, as if God said “it’s good” well before it went in. Crazy weird/good feeling. Heck, sometimes saving a par or bogey is totally exhilarating!
Like tennis, pickleball, curling, etc. there is a handicap system that makes it such that people of different playing abilities can compete with one another, so it can be fun even if you’re not Tiger Woods. Still, It’s not for everyone, and I sometimes wonder if I should do something else with my time. It’s not intensely important to my life, and there are plenty of other interests. My dad is a great player, even in his mid 70s, and I probably play for him as much as anything else. Fresh air, sunshine, walking, and open space doesn’t exactly suck either…the rest is just cake (or considerably less than cake - Ha!).
I was better at skydiving than golf… thank goodness.
I enjoy watching the game but one of the more liberating experiences I’ve had was giving my clubs away.
people say that about records and CDs too
Ha, Ha, thunes and terz. One of the luckiest experiences in my life, I had two club sets stolen in 1971, and I thought oh well, that saves me a lot of pain and money in the long run.
Scheffler won Masters again! Two years in a row. What an incredible player.
I am not a golfer. But this reminds me of something I do tend to spend a lot of time pursuing despite the intermittent nature of its reward whenever the opportunity presents itself:
FISHING.
There is a reason its not called CATCHING.
Donald, this is Scheffler’s second Master’s win, but Jon Rahm won it last year and Scheffler won the year before that.
Oh, I forget about John Rahm👍
Folks,
A little digression (with a shameless plug). For about 15 years I had plans to build a house on a block of land on the estate on which my golf club is located. It was to be my retirement retreat, serving two of my great loves, hi-fi and golf. I had designed the house around my hi-fi system. There was to be no separate ‘hi-fi room’ as such, it would have been integrated with a large, open-plan living area for both sit-down listening and background listening while I was doing other things around the house.
Sadly, I’m now unable to see the dream become a reality and need to sell the land. I thought you might be interested in watching this promo video which my estate agent prepared as part of the sales campaign which begins on Monday the 24th, just in case anyone wants to move to a beautiful part of the world (Cape Schanck, Australia).
Wonderful golf course and landscape! I supposed I can sell my condo in HI and exchange it to another beautiful beach area. I will fulfil my dream once I convert it to my vacation home.
Wait, I think 1031 exchange does not apply outside of US, never mind.
I got to play in front of a single a few days ago. The single was Barry Gibbons, the Guiness World Record holder for most rounds in a year, which was 1,235. 3.4 rounds a day average. Yikes!
I did that many rounds too, but in 10 years.
My back aches after thinking of all that play.
If I attempted that feat, my errant water shots would immediately prompt a coastal flood warning.
I could only play 14 holes this morning, because I need to get home by 10:30am to prepare a new recipe of slow cook corn beef.
Basically, I cook 4 hours at 275F, then 325 for another 2.5 hours. You must use beer and honey too. This is the first time I try it, and I have an excellent red wine ready in case the beef is not up to par. Delicious wine heals bad meal (but I think it will be great).
Really? I always thought only dumb people play golf because no matter how bad one feels about a bad game, it can always get worse😆
But they are smarter than golfers who also happen to be audiophiles.
