@RonP you bring up the obvious that I completely agree with! There are certain aspects of the PZ that should be obvious regardless of all the changes that were made. Soundstage size and depth, clarity and instrument separation etc. I agree and understand how does one make a honest comparison to what they had before P20 or Puritan if the cables running on the system are completely different and especially new and unbroken in.
The cable I’m using was on my P20 is new to me and well broken in (from the @aangen collection) it was used for 3 weeks on my P20 for 3 weeks consecutive so I’m making a fair assessment. I do benefit from Gryphon synergy. I was also using the business end of my HT with the PowerZone 3.10. Projector, processor, HD Blu-ray, Apple TV , Diablo 300, Ethos, MU1 and finally a vintage Proceed HPA-3 amplifier. Watching my first movie with my wife the PZ clipped twice. I think the load of the two amps was pushing the single PZ beyond its limits. I haven’t contacted Paul Hafner to discuss but I’m sure the PZ 3.20 would not have this issue. Since the incident I’ve found a proper place for the Proceed HPA and I’m living happily ever after no issues.
The 3.10 will serve most. I will be curious if @straightwire will have any issues with his dual BHK 600’s? The 3.10 will struggle with monster amps like an Apex and probably Pass class A amplifiers imo. If there is any doubt. Go with 3.20 and follow @aangen advice.
How was the PZ demoed? Assume that you listened to the 333 powered from the wall, then powered by the PZ?
I’m going to try to listen to the PZ at Capital Audio Fest in a few weeks, but I don’t feel very confident that I will be able to suss out qualitative sound improvements in a show environment.
For me the improvement was readily apparent, and my bias going into it was otherwise. Not subtle.
I’d make the Gryphon exhibition a destination, as in get there early and settle in.
When you return you may wish to coordinate a second group buy with an east coast dealer.
Rune did his spiel regarding the system on display. He wound up mentioning the PowerZone. With the system fed by a Vantas power cord serviced power strip, don’t recall the brand, plugged directly into the wall compared to the PowerZone fed by a generic power cord I head an immediate desirable improvement with the Gryphon PZ. This is with the lousty Axpona power supply.
The Gryphon system was Ethos CD player, Diablo 333 Integrated amplifier, EOS 5 speakers, Gryphon wiring throughout. A show high point.
Anthony Chiarella referred me to his Gryphon dealer in NJ who told me that they will not be carrying the PZ! I was so incredulous that I asked him several times to be sure I heard what I heard. Then I called Anthony and tried to get one sent to the dealer for demo and he would only do it if I guaranteed to buy it. A bizarre experience.
So when I buy one–and I will–I’ll buy it from George.
Yes. Rune Skov did say the 3.10 will power a single apex. I have my doubt. Maybe all my home theater gear was causing too much of a draw. Minus one beefy three channel amp no issues with everything else on the PZ. I may plug both amps again unplug the projector? Idk
Most here if not all won’t be using the PZ for double duty like I do.
What! I find that odd? Maybe a conversation with the dealer, as they may know something that we do not regarding the PZ. My only assumption is at the price the dealer may consider it a hard sell.
That is what Anthony conveyed to me as well, but others differ.
It is more than capable with l Pass Labs Class A, as in XA 25, XA 30, XA 60, XA 100, and possibly the XA 160. A home demo is advised regardless. Odd that Anthony won’t point you to an alternate dealer wiling to stock the PZ on the east coast.
Ron…I bought my demo Diablo 300 from the Sound Advantage in the Detroit metro area. I can highly recommend them to you. They were a straight up dealer to do business with!
You’re entitled to your opinion in this regard, but except for the most power hungry class A Pass Lab amps the PZ 3.10 seems well suited. Many find the Pass Labs XA 60 mono blocks to be the sweet spot in the line for their systems, for which the PZ 3.10 is tailor made.
You seem to be a good criminologist.
Or did you ask your crystal ball?
I really need the numbers for the lottery this weekend.
I had the Allucator in my shortlist. The power cable is fixed connected , which is not bad since it is a silver cable. Then I heard that there is a MAX version with a better cable. Just like the Powerzone 3.10 and 3.20 in this version. The surcharge was also the same.
By chance I came across a Furutech Vault. Since the dealer made me an almost unbelievable offer, I decided to go for it. He also gave me the right to exchange it if it does not meet my expectations. I can use my cable first and upgrade later depending on my taste and budget.
I hope the Vault works just as well with the Wunderbox as I experienced with the Allucator.
I will report back as soon as I can test the things in my system at home.
Paul, were you advised not to connect all your equipment?
You say the power zone was overloaded. Could you hear it or was there smoke coming out?
Was there any distortion in the sound?
The power zone doesn’t have a protective device. If so, then it’s broken and out.
One wonders. I wonder if the PZ has been sold and installed on the east coast. Gryphon may not be in the cards for you.
If you were closer mine would be supplying your Pass Labs gear. I think you would enjoy it.
Agreed! I can’t imagine a Gryphon dealer not connecting all the gear they sell including Gryphon to a powerzone! Doesn’t seem like a good business decision on their part.
For whatever reason PZ sounds great again after three days! Come to think of it, many components in my system sounded better three days after. It could be that my old brain needed that much time to adjust to the new sound!
