Help a newbie out on easiest and best way to get DSD into DirectStream unit over ethernet

Let me work through your reply and report back.
I do appreciate your time.
Very possible I have something configured wrong.

Definitely start with baby steps and look into a bridge II before going down that Matrix rabbit hole :grimacing:

@joe-appierto

Yep. Checked all of those settings and they are all checked as required.
Still will only play the .dsf files sent via Coax from the OPPO 105 to the external DAC, but only via PCM and they play at 88.2kHz.
When I send the same files straight to the external DAC via ethernet bypassing the OPPO 105 completely they play at full resolution.

This is a head-scratcher. Let me think about it some more because if you’re using JRiver to send the files to the Oppo which in turn is sending them via the coax to the DAC you should see the same thing: full resolution.

You may have already checked on this but have you checked with Oppo to see if the 105 will output DSD over Coax, it may be a limitation on the unit itself since it would normally do so over HDMI or Analog RCA.

Do you have the three boxes on the second screen also checked?

Bitstream DSD (requires DoPE compliant renderer

Kevin,

When used in conjunction with JRiver it will pass DoP to the DS DAC over coax. When used on its own (no JRiver) it won’t. It passes the DSF file as 88/24.

@joe-appierto

Ha!. Making progress. That Advanced setting within advanced settings has done something.
The SONICA external DAC now says DSD 2.822 Mhz.. As you can see it is via COAX. Its a little buggy in terms of advancing to next track, but it is working.

Is that DSD64??

Yes. :slight_smile:
I seem to remember having a problem with that way back when but don’t remember at the moment how I fixed it.

In the interim try “Select All” and see if that works as a temporary fix.

VAC, eh? Very nice.

@joe-appierto

Where is “Select All”?? I just see “Play” on the options.

I also get a slight pop when it starts at the beginning of song.
Not the big pop that one sometimes got before on .DSF files.

As you know Jriver can be a little flaky. Will play around with it.

Have to ask… Do you hear a difference between the extra stopover flight from OPPO 105 to the PS Audio vs the a direct flight to the Bridge II? LOL

Open the folder as you’ve done in your screen shot then select one of the tracks. Right mouse click the track you selected and a menu will appear. Then go to Edit Commands on the menu, slide your cursor over it and you’ll see Select All. That will highlight all the tracks. Right mouse click the group of highlighted tracks and you’ll see Play. Then you’re in business. I get the pop sometimes when it’s switching from one bit rate to another within the selected tracks but not usually when the transition is between identical bit rates.

I do hear a slight difference between the Oppo in the mix versus just the Bridge but I’ve never decided if one is superior to the other. Just my 2¢ naturally.

I believe the way to prevent the stopping after each track when you don’t use Select All is as follows.

Right mouse click the Oppo 105 in the Now Playing section of the screen and that’ll bring up another menu. Select DNA Controller Options and make sure the Disable SetNext Support is check marked. Sounds counterintuitive but that seems to prevent JRiver from stopping after each track is played.

@joe-appierto

Thanks for all of your help.
I have it transitioning from one track to the next now pretty well.

Still get the little pop at beginning of every track. It just may be a product of the path and the DoP process in my specific hardware setup.

I posted on the JRiver forum to see if anyone there had any thoughts.

Will end up probably looking to find a used Bridge II.

Oh- as for the VAC preamp. Picked that up used a couple years ago. Its very transparent and quiet. Can try different tubes also. Its a nice unit and allows me to hear the differences in any upgrades in my system that I make.

Thanks again for all of your help and to all of the others who jumped in here.
Looking forward to hearing the DirectStream next week.

You’re welcome. Glad things are progressing for you in the right direction. Enjoy the DS DAC when it arrives. You’re going to like it a good deal I believe and should you do decide to get the Bridge II even more so.

If u are interested I may have my bridge II available for you to buy. Please let me know. My email is sourav.mazumder00@gmail.com.

Thank you for the offer, Sourav.
I did find a used one from a forum member that I should have next week.

I did get the PSA DS unit and set it up yesterday.
Got the DoP stream going via coax.
So far so good.
Have to think a Bridge II might be better in some ways.
We will see.
