Here’s another DSD256 with incredible sonics. Don’t miss out on the Black Friday sale going on right now.

Everything you said about this recording is spot on! I just played it with the DSD MKII DAC and I heard richness and presence I have never heard in any other version of this recording. I compared it with my many SACD’s and the SACD’s sounds washed out in comparison!

Terrific! So glad to know you’re hearing what I hear with this release. Thanks for letting me know! :upside_down_face:

OK, I’ve posted a tease once before about a coming new release from HDTT that Bob has not yet announced. That was Billy Holiday’s Lady in Satin. Well, yesterday I got to listen to a preview of yet another new release that just knocks my socks off.

As with KOB and several other recent jazz recordings, this one comes from a similarly excellent source tape. And in this pre-release Pure DSD256 transfer, it sounds superb. I had some other digital reissues of this album in my music library for a comparison – the commercial OJC, SACD and high resolution FLAC files I have didn’t come close. More fun: this is one of the best selling jazz albums of all time. It’s a good-un.

Coming soon, coming soon… If you love jazz, this will be worth saving your shekels for.

Here is the album about which I posted a tease a week agol. Released today by HDTT in Pure DSD256, and simply stunning! From a 15ips tape.

Take my $$!

Will be interested in whether it is better than my SACD version…

You’ll have to let us know. I think it is better than my AP SACD of the album. Here’s part of what my review for PF will say once they can post it:

As with a number of HDTT’s recent jazz reissues, I’m hearing on this release what I’m coming to expect from these 15ips tape transfers to DSD256: more air around the instruments, greater texture and timbral density, greater resolution, more delicate highs, increased overall transparency, and more relaxed sound overall—like good analog. If you’ve listened to HDTT’s recent Pure DSD256 releases of Kind of Blue , or Getz/Gilberto , or Cootie Williams In Stereo , or Lady in Satin , you’ve heard the kind of extraordinarily transparent sound to which I’m referring.

Looking forward to it…question for you @Rushton:

I like to own physical media and would be purchasing the 24K Gold disc version.

Will the 24/96 download I would be entitled to be worth my while, in your opinion?

(BTW, for a $3.00 difference, their failure to allow me access to the DSD files kind of irks me. :man_shrugging:.)

Scott

For the $3 difference, you can download ALL formats from the HDTT site when you purchase the 256DSD version

Hence, my mild consternation.

Thanks,

Can’t help with your frustration there, @scotte1, but I understand where you’re coming from. I know Bob is not making much margin on the physical products he ships. He used to include the 24-96 file download with purchase of the CD, but I think he made a business decision to stop rather than raising his prices. Can you still get the 24-96 download included with the CD purchase?

Ah, answered by own question. The 24-96 download is still included with the full price CD.

Given the DSD mastering pedigree:

Will the 24/96 download I would be entitled to with my 24K Gold CD purchase be worth my while, in your opinion? IOW, am I still justified in expecting a better record than what I have now on standard CD and SACD discs?

TIA.

So, to answer your question… My experience is that the 24-96 files do sound better than the CD resolution 16-44 files. The 24k Gold discs may a give better optical extraction off the disc, but if they are still 16-44 resolution… I suggest you try it so you can know for yourself on your system.

@scotte1, the mastering Bob is doing from his tape sources is giving a VERY clean, VERY resolving transfer from the tape. When he has a very good 15ips tape (like this one), then it may be a better source than was used in making the standard CD or SACD. And given his care and technical skill in transferring from the tape, his end results may be superior given his attention to all the details of his tape playback system. But, since I’ve never compared a lower resolution file from Bob to that same lower resolution commercial release, I’m not able to answer your question from actual listening experience. I will say that all of his DXD and DSD256 releases sound better than the commercial releases of CD, SACD and less than the higher res pcm (e.g., 24-192) that I’ve heard.

Thanks for the insight and candor.

I’ll probably pick up the 24K Gold CD. After all, you can’t really be a “Time Out” fan if you don’t own at least three separate versions of the recording…can you?

Regards.

 So true!

I will be interested to know what you hear if you sample the 24-96 file, also.

I just compared the HDTT DSD256 version with my 24 bit 176.4 version as well as my AP 45rpm vinyl and first, the 24 bit version’s highs were more prominent has more sparkle than the other two version, it was also much leaner. The other frequencies were similar, more brightness, but also much leaner and flat. DSD 256 version does sounds remarkably close to the LP, very dense and 3D like. Only thing is the HDTT version has the channels reversed compared to the other two version, but it is not the first time this has happened.

That is not good (no?).

They must have crossed the channel in the remastering process. I don’ know, it does’t bother me too much, just as long as the sound is extraordinary, but maybe there are others that is more critical on this reversal. Another thing I notice is there seem to be some print through most noticeably from tracks 5 and 6 as I hear a sort of soft echo of the sound right before it starts, but you don’t hear it as the music continues to play. Anyway the sound is hard to beat from this DSD 256.
