Holo Red impressions

Regular reminder - has anyone tried running a music server and streamer process on a Holo Red yet?
e.g. LMS and a squeezelite instance?

and where exactly did you install the master?

I found better result with Pi + Ian Canada. Flagship compact size FIFO Re-clock Streamer KITs with Ultracapacitor\ – IanCanada

I haven’t I don’t have a Holo Red that’s why I’m asking…

But the Holo Red is a Raspberry Pi with custom digital IO (and USB), so can take any number of images, should be pretty easy to install e.g. LMS and squeezelite on it, and put the original supplied OS in a drawer for safe keeping

Apologies if this has been answered (I can’t read through all 1064 posts), but I’m considering either a Sonore Signature Rendu SE (used) , Optical Rendu Deluxe (new), or the Holo Red.

Both Sonore units are WAY more expensive than the Red…do they provide a significant (or any) difference in sound quality?

Welcome to the forum!

I’m afraid I haven’t heard a Sonore before so I can’t comment, but I know a few members have had them - hard to say if we have any who have had both. Hopefully someone can chime in

I’ve owned just about every sonore piece (signature, Ultra and optical). Currently using an opticalRendu deluxe. I’m a big fan, the system works as close to flawless as possible (I’ve owned both PSA bridges and a Matrix, far from flawless). I think the opticalRendu sounds great but I don’t spend much time A/Bing stuff. I don’t know anything about the Holo Red. Good luck. Lots of deals on used signature rendu (I just sold mine) and you can send it in to get upgraded.

Thanks. I’ve been a fan of Sonore going back to 2010, and helped Jesus with their I2S testing on the original PSA Perfectwave DAC (I was a Beta tester).

Pricing being what it is (even on used Signature Rendu), I can’t help but wonder how the $800 Red performs vs a $2300 (used) SR.

I had both at same time. But I also have a Melco S100 switch which is fed by fiber. I did not notice a difference in quality. But again, I have the fiber done before a really good switch. One fed out of that switch by fiber and one by good ethernet. I ended up going with Red before I got the eversolo. In the end I think going with a good switch like the LHY and doing the media conversion there opens up your options quite a bit.

So my summary after investigating a few months various scenarios like different OS versions (from Holo OS, HQ PlayerOS etc.) and different power cords as well as fuses.
What initially (by the default installation of the Holo Red) has already been really a very good streamer for its price. With a better power cord you can improve things very easily. Next is also very easy to get software-tuning by using one of the highly optimized OS versions suited for your specific use-case. For many HQPlayer which provides an own Holo Red OS image it’s astonishing to see what is possible with their NAA approach. And when I thought I already improved the overall performance considerably the SR Master fuse is just amazing and something I would have never expected to cause such a noticeable improvement.
So I really very much recommend trying out some of these options as the Holo Red is actually a very powerful platform and outperforms other vendors costing many times the price of the Red.

Evening, just wanted to post my experience on the Red. I bought it shortly after it was launched to pair it with the Directstream Mk2. Had it up until recently and mainly sold it due to issues of it dropping connection to Spotify Connect (yes I’m well aware Spotify is lossy but prefer the playlists). So I contacted my closest dealer thinking I’d try a Eversolo DMP-A6 as it had a nice screen and had favourable reviews. However, he had received a trade on a Lumin U2 Mini with S Booster linear power supply. I did some reading and it looked like the connectivity was rock solid based on others experiences. So I picked it up mainly on the fact that it would be a more stable alternative and if it sounded better, great. Well, I just hooked it up tonight, I can tell you it is MUCH better than my Red. I really can’t get over how much better it has improved the sound from clarity to noise floor. Anyway, for those wondering how much a streamer really matters, all I can say is you MUST demo a decent streamer to see if it makes a difference in your system. I think my DAC was really missing a good source and it really made a dramatic difference.

Just for reference I had a Audioquest Carbon HDMI cable for i2s connection to the Red. And have a Neotech USB cable connection to the Lumin.

Congratulations.

Please let us know if intermittent connectivity remains an issue.

I am curious because I never had connectivity issues with the Red when I had it.

Thanks for sharing your impressions, is this without any resampling (up or downsampling) applied? Reason I ask is a lot of the comments I see for Lumin U streamers apply the DSD256 upsampling, which doesn’t really make sense to me since the DS will resample the incoming signal already.

I’ve also owned a Red since it was released and it has worked flawlessly with mConnect or JPlay for IOS but then never bothered with Spotify only Qobuz and Tidal.

Resampling is currently set to off.

I suspect it’s a Spotify Connect issue. It worked decent with Bubbleupnp but the interfac was poor Imo.

Similar conclusions here whith HQPe and NAA but with the difference of a Purple fuse in the Red instead of a Master. Could you please let us know if you went from the stock fuse to the Master of you had an upgraded fuse in between? Just from stock to the Purple it was a big jump in performance. Thanks.

I made an upgrade first from stock fuse to purple which was a noticeable upgrade. And then going to Master was another major step.

Btw: a Holo Red with HQPlayer/NAA OS easily beats a Lumin U2 Mini with SBooster or Farad3.

Is anyone having any further ideas how to tweak the performance of the Holo Red any further?

I plan to install a Synergetic Research Galileo or Euphoria power cable.
