Agreed!
Sigh, I spent $2200 each for two High Level Interconnects for my two REL subs. When my bunny ate one I replaced it. I remember thinking they made a difference that even I can hear. Now you tell me.
Thanks for joining in Chris…. obviously, you’re the expert in all of this.
There are a few things that I still don’t fully understand. I found a video that Paul had made explaining the difference between using the low-level output (preamp) vs the high-level output (amplifier). Basically, this video Paul said that every amplifier has its own unique sound, and for optimal bass reproduction, the signal to the subwoofer should have the same sound signature.
My issue with that is currently I’m using both outputs on my BHK 300’s bi-wiring my 802Ds. I’ve found that using Cardas speaker cable on the high side, calms down (more neutral) the brightness of the 802Ds (not enough, but it helps some), while the audioquest on the bass side, seems clearer and not as muddy sounding. Another video Paul explains how with today’s newer cables, bi-wiring is not necessary. However, how do I find this out without purchasing a pair of 10’ speaker cables and hoping for the best?
A few years ago I switched from Cardas interconnects between the preamp and amps to audioquest water (XLR 10’ length), and (at that time) made my Bryston preamp unlistenable in my system. I no longer have the Cardas interconnects. I often wonder how the BHK300’s would sound if I had those old interconnects.
Getting back to the F12’s, I plan on purchasing a pair (step 1), if I were able to hook them up to the high-level output, would it be an RCA connector on the subwoofer side, and spade connectors on the amplifier side? Alternatively, if I were to hook up to the Low-level side, would it be RCA connectors on both ends (since the XLR are used for the amps)? I thought long runs of RCA cables weren’t advisable since they can pick up noise if too long (not to mention expensive).
The third option is the wireless option that is offered. Is it true that having both subwoofers in a mono mode is not as good of an option as having them in stereo mode? Or, does the flexibility of positioning the subwoofers outweigh the stereo / mono issue? Also, I’d need to purchase a pair of RCA interconnects for the preamp to the wireless unit. Would you recommend Audioquest Water cables, or something else for a subwoofer?
thanks, Art
Hi Art,
We 100% support high level (aka speaker level input) into our subs. You can run them stereo or mono.
If you are using spades on one of the amp outputs, you can connect a second set of cables via a banana plug into the subs.
Mono mode is generally better than stereo, as there is no stereo perception down below 100 Hz and the benefit of multiple mono sources relates to getting consistent smoother in-room response because of the way room modes are averaged because of having multiple LF sources. Still, it’s up to you. We support both.
Why don’t you give us a call here and chat with Taylor or one of our team and I can help support.
