I seriously dislike quote’s like that one. The DMP is not going to be left in anybody’s dust! It is just sales jargon and is insulting to those who have invested in high quality produtcs like the DMP.
It strikes me as typical audiophile hyperbole; we unduly emphasize differences.
If the new unit beats the DMP I will be impressed.
If the new unit beats an Esoteric/MSB/dCS etc, at the undiscounted PS Audio price point, I will be even more impressed.
How does the Air Gap Interface work?
Yup, gottcha. The new transport will be a better choice in that case. I will tease just a little by saying we are in negotiations with a big company to purchase SACD drives for the new transport. They are extremely expensive and the deal is not finalized but
there is a chance.
Any pending release date ? sacd or not…
My best guess based on the fact both the server and transport will have identical Air Gap Interfaces and output stages is that they two will sound pretty identical, so it’ll simply be a matter of choice between physical mediums or stored/streaming.
This is simply incorrect. It doesn’t mean “no DSD” it means no SACD. The new transport will be able to play data discs with DVD on them which is what we released on our last CD and will also release with upcoming Octave Record launches.
As I previously mentioned, there’s a chance we can score a wicked cool SACD mechanism and we’re working hard to make that happen. I can’t promise it.
But, whatever happens, we will play and support DSD.
Well, Mr @Elk, or not, hey! I’m on the verge of my “told you so” gloating
Alpha units are scheduled for late October at this point.
Is PSA still planning on a trade back program for the less then happy DMP owners? Any details in the works for it?
Excellent! Of course that will be something I want, but the cost, oh my it could be oh so high. If it is the drive I am thinking of I know it alone will cost a good portion of the whole DMP and will certainly require a nice set of electronics and, oh, maybe an Obsidian case. Oh my wallet is already crying …
I don’t think my experience with the DMP is unique to me or my setup… It simply produces a more satisfying musical experience than any other source, transport or file-based, that I’ve ever heard.
Interestingly, the only thing that has come close (for me) is my HiFiMan HM901s portable player, with the “musical” amplifier card. This is what I listen to when travelling for business, and it’s AMAZING! It’s quirky as shit (sometimes requiring removal of the battery to reset), but it’s worth the hassle for the sound.
maybe trade in my DMP for the new player…
Paul already said the case will be of the standard dmp/ds design…
I do recall that, but given the potential high dollar drive mechanism they may move upscale with it. Of course we are probably six months or more away from this.
In a post above Paul mentioned Alpha units late October…
And if so - anyone actually having them in hand would be at least on the order of 6 months later.
Hmm…So,first units scheduled for release late October really means late April or beyond?
Good chance. Keep in mind an alpha unit is something internal to PS Audio, most likely they will encounter issues needing improvement. Based on the DMP, one would think the software part will get a LOT of attention. Software development can be maddening, witness all the iterations with the DMP (admittedly the DMP is a real special case).
