I read somewhere, or watched something, about Merry Clayton being a last minute, spur of the moment kind of thing. IIRC, someone in the studio one night during recording thought of her and she was dragged out of bed in the middle of the night over to the studio to sit/sing in – and the rest is history, as they say.

Good stuff…
