LHY SW-6: Snake Oil or A Substantial Upgrade?

Just to be clear…my main point was that my files, which Roon and JRMC can access from my iMac and NAS, seem to sound better when rendered by JRMC rather than Roon. In both cases, I am not “streaming online”, so to speak.

FWIW.

Cheers.

PS

I rarely prefer a file Roon and Qobuz pulls from the Internet to what appears to be the same recording in the same resolution I have in my networked library. But these difference are often subtle and I have to be careful to just focus on enjoying the music.

Ok I understand. I have the same experience between streaming and playing from my HD. Quite a bit of difference.

So after listening for a few days with the Matrix in the system I decided to give a listen without it in the system. WOW!! Took about 30 secs before I hooked it back up. So much more smooth airy and clear. I was worried it wouldn’t be enough of an improvement for the money spent but I’m smiling now

There are plenty more smiles to be had as you burrow down the rabbit hole!! Enjoy!

The weakest link in the chain could be the computer, which Matrix is helping to improve a little.

Think about it this way: how big could your smile be if you completely eliminated the weakest link to the point where you could eliminate the Matrix itself, since it has become the weakest link?

And so on… it never ends!

We are going out of topic, sorry… LHY SW people!

Thank you :v:

That’s the problem! I just bought the Matrix…

It ends with the limits of my budget laughing: I will spend the money if I have it to spend though.

Thank you very much for all of the insight you’ve been very helpful.

I stayed up late last night listening and ended up toeing my speakers in some. With the extra clarity and relaxed nature with the Matrix in the system my speakers are no longer top heavy. I had barrowed my friends Adcom amp and preamp before buying the Gain Cell DAC and ended up with my speakers toed out slightly because the highs were way too much and harsh. Funny enough I was using his amp for a month or so before he brought over his preamp and I was using a Topping E50 as the DAC/PREAMP. I hooked up his preamp and was blown away by the difference. Comparable to having the bass/treble controls turned all the way down as apposed to flat. But something wasn’t right. The highs were off. I hooked my amp back up and realized my friends amp needs repair. This wasn’t something I noticed using the Topping. Everything sounded right and I even had to turn my sub down there was so much more bass. With the Topping it always sounded dull which is why I was looking at buying a proper preamp. I had my speakers toed in quite a bit with the Topping to compensate. Anyways I’m rambling…

Point is even my Klipsch KG 3.2s sound relaxed and pleasant using the Gain Cell DAC and Matrix. Can’t wait to see what decent cables do…

Off Topic?:

I highly recommend the book, “Get better Sound” by Jim Smith.

It’s inexpensive and a great resource for getting your room, speaker placement and listening position sorted.

It addresses issues so fundamental that I suggest you work through Jim’s setup process before spending another dime.

I think you will enjoy the process.

Great advice! I have spent a lot of time learning proper placement and treatment. I have several test files in the music collection I was given. I feel like I am really close with speaker placement and am adding treatment slowly. I had no clue about imaging and sound stage last time I was building a system and I clearly see how important placement/treatment is. This is in my living room but I’ve dedicated it to audio so there isn’t much in the room besides the stereo. It’s only 12x14 and my speakers are about 3’ into the room for example. So it really needs some treatment. I recently added thick curtains which helped a bunch. I can no longer make the room ring with my voice

Plz keep sharing your advice I value it and want to learn :v:

Hi there - I have not been here in a bit. I have been so happy with my LHY switches - word clock locked using BNC - Connected with FO and Optispan SFP’s. Upgraded recently from Lumin U2 mini to U2. Also Furutech Outlets to power. Been enjoying music so much I haven’t been here - I think that is the whole point of all this. I got some great advice here - especially Chang 05 - thank you!

For your sake, please stay away from this forum again! I bet that would be the best advice Donald would give you.

I haven’t followed everything here about LHY 6 and decided to read it. I wanted to improve my streaming chain. As a switch in front of my Melco s100 switch, I’m looking for a way to bridge this distance with a fiber optic. Does it have to be the LHY 6 or is the FMC just as good. Gustard still exists. But are these just as good? Isolated Lan input, clock, etc. I don’t need any other Lan ports. It should only output the SFP signal. Modules and cables. It is probably important that these fit together for optimal results. Open to suggestions.

Greetings Andrew

Hey there. I have the Melco S100 as well. I used a simple media converter and loved it. I have since moved. I am in the middle of building my room. I bought a SW6 and it has burning in for a while. My plan is to have it behind front wall in unfinished area where internet comes in. I have run a 10M optospan fiber already in the wall to where the rack and Melco will live. So I have not had them together in chain other than burn in in front of streamer. They 100% compatible and streamer worked fine over roon. Some pics of my build from a few days ago. A few more wires to move so I have no hidden junction boxes in ceiling. Garage is full of insulation, Sonopan, and sheet rock ready to go.

At least the armchairs are already in the room. This will definitely be a great room. The LHY 6 is also my favorite. The FMC should also serve its purpose. Advantage or disadvantage? no other LAN connections.

Are the walls non-parallel?

Are you going to build in bass traps in the corners?

Extra insulation in the walls?

Double layers of sheet rock for sound proofing?

Just needling you.

What a great opportunity to set up a dedicated listening space from scratch you have. Enjoy the journey.

Looking forward to seeing more pictures of progress and the final build out.

Regards.

This is my third dedicate room in 25 years. Learned many things along the way. Good questions. But yeah parallel walls and short ceilings are things I can’t change. But it’s 16x25 so good size. There is a wall at 21 feet to hold rear speakers as it’s dual purpose room. But it’s only 8’ wide.

I have a ton room treatments ready to go. Combination of Vicoustics diffusers and absorbing. Temped to use their service to see where to hang.

I am using pocket doors to get to behind screen unfinished area as well as under stairs. The rack will be facing front in the area under the door at top of stairs. This will give me ample space to get access to rear of rack and will keep wires hidden.

Man that looks like allot of fun…I have a similar room - also highly treated but 18x15. 9.4.6.

This thread inspired me to order an LHY SW-6 and SW-10 in black 110V from Tek Audio Specialties in TX. Tek Audio is the US rep for LHY. I felt more comfortable ordering from them than other sources. Todd was very helpful. Be advised the SW-10 is back-ordered with limited availability opening up soon that may evaporate quickly.

I also ordered all the associated fiber optic cables and transceivers that I will need from SanSpot (exclusive OptoSpan distributor) in NY. The recommended transceiver is back-ordered, but expected to be back in stock in time to coordinate with my SW-10 delivery.

I will be using these in conjunction with a Lumin U2.
