I was using a high back recliner as my sweet spot chair. One night while getting up during a session I noticed a significant improvement in the sound stage. Long story short after much toying, it appears that having the reflective surface directly behind my ears detracts from the presentation. Never seen this discussed, Anyone have thoughts/experience?
Paul had mentioned this very thing in one of his videos and stated that he specifically selects low back chairs for the listening lab. I haven’t seen this specific issue discussed here but would also like t know if this is something others have noticed.
Yep!!
Yes, listening chair with a low back, and no walls behind the listening chair for another 16 feet (not a rule on 16 feet, but it helps)

Thanks! Don’t know how I missed them.
I recently bought the Eames Lounge Chair (leather). It replaces a couch with fabric upholstery. What struck me about SQ is that it’s clearer, more fresh and detailed. As if I had a component upgrade.
On both, my head is well above the top, on the couch even more than the chair. I assume, the upholstery (and foam) is damping quite a bit.
Yep, I had the same experience. I think leather dampens a bit less than fabric. OR it could be that you are so much more comfortable in an Eames Chair that music just sounds better ![]()
I think I remember hearing the OCI hifi guy had the headrest of his seats redone in sheepskin to dampen reflections. It did make some sense to me when you consider they are right by your ears. I’m guessing that open space would be ideal though.
Just laying sheepskin on any headrest is a pretty easy tweak.
I like a chair that has height adjustment like an office chair with an ottoman. I find sitting to low you lose bass impact at least in my system and room.
