I’m looking to upgrade my Pioneer DJ PLX-500 for under $1000. I’ve had my eyes on a U-Turn Orbit Custom for $885.96 or Fluance RT85 for $531.24 including tax/shipping. Is there anything else you would recommend I look into?
Just a used Lenco L75. You could get one under $1000. Stock arm is kind of fey. I put an Ortofon arm on mine. If you are unfamiliar do a little studying. They are some audiophiles absolute favorite turntables.
The three you mention are nice enough, but a Lenco L75 is a statement piece. For generations.
Had one of those back in the day. Loved it and left it with an old girl friend. Miss that turntable.
Just make sure you know its needs and can locate a knowledgeable repair tech. Great turntable.
See if you can find a VPI “classis” I or II series table with the JM Memorial tone arm. These were popular and are a great table. Been around a good while so MAYBE you can get a really nice table for a little more. Probably $1,500.00, though. If not this model, the VPI are relly good tables, just search for the model just BELOW the classic until you hit the right price point. All solid designs. Super nice company to work with, too.
I can vouch for that. I gave a VPI Classic 1 that I bought in 2015. Still looks like new and sounds as good as the day I bought it. I have been very happy with it over the years.
Yes, I’m using the VPI classic II with a SUMIKO high output MC. Really happy with the “Lyra” type bouncy dynamic sound.

If your $1000 budget includes the cartridge that’s a tough one. If it’s just the TT I’d look at used Rega tables. They are simple, sound great and can be significantly upgraded with mods from folks like Groovetracer.
Great advice
I have reservations with REGA. I had an RP10 that I thought would be my last ever turntable. It was wonderful. But the RP8 seemed cheesy as hell to me. Not even in the same category as the RP10. So if the RP8 was cheesy, what are the inexpensive REGA turntables like. I don’t know, but I have strong thoughts on what I might expect. As always, your mileage may vary.
..and of course neither hits his budget. If he can stretch his budget slightly a new Rega P3 is a solid choice. It is simple to set up and maintain. Better to go with a new turntable at this price point.
I was not suggesting he buy a P8 or P10. I was merely questioning the quality of the P3 range.
At its price it is a solid player, and none too fickle.
An ideal choice for a novice in a modest playback system.
