I may be able to tell given some specs, but I didn’t see any when looking briefly. The TSS’s drive will be the approximately same as the DS and DS Jr, except for being 2VRMS unbalanced, 4VRMS balanced instead of sqrt(2)VRMS and sqrt(8)VRMS.
Looks to me like a lot of people paid money up front and no one has any product delivered yet?
That’s right. The product isn’t ready for shipping yet. They encountered a lot of unexpected hurdles along the way, all of which were communicated to those who had stumped up their cash.
I didn’t do any research but am interested. How much is the cost going too be (if known)?
I should add that I do a lot of HP listening.
Pre-order was $410 CAD + shipping and sold out a long time ago. Retail will be $660 CAD.
Sounds very reasonable if the SQ is good
Pricing of Grandioso P1X and D1X has been announced at AXPONA. US$50K for the P1X, and for a pair of D1X. $100K for the set. Ouch, far more expensive than I was anticipating. The price in Australia is much cheaper (AU$55K = US$39K), which doesn’t happen very often.
So that’s a week’s pension spoken for…
If only our US friends had the correct voltage I might be able to flip a couple of sets per month to supplement my frugal pension. Spectrum of the Seas is heading my way on its maiden voyage and a cabin upgrade and beverage package would be nice (well, Royal Caribbean sozzle me with free alcohol once per cruise anyway!). I’ll be surfing the flowrider out at sea this day next month…my M3 can have a rest for a few days. This day last year I was on Mariner of the Seas heading for Dubai - no flowrider then but it has one now. I’m fully recovered from busting my ankle on the flowrider on Voyager of the Seas last year. Jeez, I should have sued them and made a million. Oasis of the Seas cruise to Vietnam later this year, lucky the crane whacked it when it did and not when I’m about to set sail on it. Ovation of the Seas is still my favorite ship (I’m in the process of completing my mission of cruising on the full set of Royal Caribbean ships, sometimes I feel I should have been in the Navy and not the Army).
The Absolute Sounds 2019 product catalog and price lists landed in my email inbox overnight.
My M3 and S-Sub alone come to £120,000 = US$156,000 , that is just an insane markup (Aren’t I clever, I worked out how to do £ in MacOS!).
Good grief, some eye watering numbers there. Makes me appreciate even more how life is so much better in this part of the HiFi universe.
Wow this is a long thread! Magico is awesome. For my reference system I choose wilsons but Magico is just as good really. You cannot disrespect Magico in any way. It is true Top of The Line. Sonus Faber finally sold out. Stuff is junk now. They used to make speakers at this level. I honestly did not read this all but Magico is hooked up to a DS? If so that cements how good it is obviously.
Ummm, no. The DS and DSJ were both sold a long time ago. I had on-going problematic issues with both, for a long time. I’ve moved on to Esoteric, which I’m happy with. I also had an Ayon Audio DAC and I was very happy with that as well, but the Esoteric is just better at everything. I preferred my Esoteric to a fully tricked up MSB Select 2, but that was in a different system.
I agree with your sentiments about Sonus faber. They used to be a brand to be admired, now they are built to appeal to a different audience.
Yes, Esoteric Grandioso is better than DS. Much. I too have had many issues with the DS but what the heck still using it. I have a feeling by last Rev. Firmware it shall be a good contender. Not MSB or Esoteric but squarely beat Chord DAVE already IMO. YMMV on that though. It is a reasonably good DAC plagued with bugs and build issues. Hopefully TSS will be much better. I bet bugs, at least at first but should sound up there hopefully.
The TSS has a new name. Obsidian. Which I found a little odd as that name is used elsewhere…Continuum Audio Labs call their top turntable the same thing.

I am thinking the Obsidian name comes from the front panel colors and may or may not be an official name. I had not heard it referred by that name before the last show.
I’ll bet like this crazy looking turntable is probably named for the same reason. I imagine it cost more than my house.
Unless one makes up words, as do auto manufacturers, it is difficult to come up with a name which has not been used before in some context. If one performs a trademark search it is amazing how many companies have trademarked the same word for their product or service niche.
Ted Smith Signature DAC was in vogue for a long time. I doubt any other company would Shanghai that name. Not unless the great man eloped with somebody else!
Obsidian might be Ted’s middle name…
“Ted Smith Signature DAC” is not a word; it is a phrase.
Just to clarify, names can be phrases. Look at the world of race horses.
