If you can DIY at all I have two suggestions for improving your sound. Replace the capacitors and inductors in the 1.7i with film and air core respectively. If your MX121 is like my MX118 (which is very likely) replace the NE5532 opamps with LM4562. The opamps are in sockets so no soldering required.
Thanks, but I am not an electronics DIYer. There is a good probability I would damage my unit.
You can do a couple simple, inexpensive mods to the 1.7’s. Replacing the stock HF fuses and jumpers with better ones, would help.
As a 1.7 and FR 30’s owner, the comparison is quite stark. These differences are greater than the ones between the FR10 and FR30. The 1.7’s equal the FR series only in creating a very seamless presentation top to bottom. Outside of that, the FR’s outperform in speed, accuracy, definition, low frequency extension…any category you examine.
The only wild card is the room in which the speaker is played. Some rooms favor a dipole design, others may favor a sealed cabinet. Both will improve as your gear gets better but I would offer that the Maggie’s really blossom with a lot of clean watts and when pared with subs. That condition may influence your value equation.
Thanks for the advice. I lived in OC, California until last year. I bought my Magnepans from Scott Walker Audio in Anaheim. They suggested replacing the fuses with a fuse they recommended for $800 ish. I thought that sounded a lot for a couple fuses & didn’t do it. . Thought I read a while ago replacing the fuses would void the warranty, maybe ? They are now a couple months past the 3 year warranty. I may buy new speakers later this year & sell the Maggies. Investing money into the Maggies doesn’t seem like a good idea now. I appreciate your Mag, FR30 comparison.
