Magnepan 3.7i vs 20.7

Those look awesome!

nice work.

How do you have them connected? Separate amplifier? I did read that you can connect them, what, in series(?) with the mains…?

They connect main amp to DWM from DWM to main speaker. I am not sure if there is a built in filter?

I too think maybe a benefit to a separate amp to DWM’s run mains wide open.

The way I was told to hook them up was to attach both sets of speaker wires to the main terminals. No cross overs are needed. With the M1200s and the M700s before, I hooked the 3.7is to one set of terminals and the DWM to the other. I tried to get a link to the DWM manual from the Magnepan site but kept getting an error. I think the larger Magnepans get wired like I have mine and the smaller ones take advantage of the crossover in the DWM but I can’t get the wiring diagram of the magnepan site.

I have 20.7s with 2 Rel Carbon LTD subs. The crossover on the subs are set relatively low at 39 Hz so one could argue I don’t need the subs but I miss them when they are off. They integrate easily and sound better when you lift them off the floor and out of the corners to reduce room node issues.

I think subs are needed with ANY Magnepan speaker. The Maggies may do down to 25 hz per spec. But at what? -15 to -18 db or so pending the room. All Maggies could use a sub for full experience. SO I agree subs are the way to go.

I should be picking up a 20.7 pair later next week! Finally!

Congrats.

Congrats! My brother loves his. I love his, too, but I have to ā€œsettleā€ for .7s.

@darrenv1070. I found that Maggie 20.7 go down to around 30hz in my 18 ft by 30ft by 8ft room. I have adjusted my 2 sub crossovers all the way down to 30 hz from 39. I then turned the volume level up. I am now getting better coverage from 20hz to 30 with the Rel carbon subs. Lesson learned after a year wasted not using my subs correctly. An artist called Bass Mechanik has a number of albums that play low bass notes at increments of 1hz so you can more easily determine how low your main speakers go in your room.

I don’t have Maggies but based on your comment about taking the sub crossover all the way down to 30 Hz it inspired me to try it and I’m liking it.

How many clicks do you go on the sub volume with crossover all the way down like that?

I have been gone from home so I apologise for my delayed response. I have the volume at 14 clicks out of 40 or around 10:30 to 11:00 in clock view. Previously I was at around 8 or 9 clicks with the higher 39 hz crossover setting. I have Rel subs with both the yellow and red wires attached to my amps. Still playing around with the volume but I have found that there is a lot less potential bloat from my previous too high crossover.

Wow, thanks. That is way higher than I have my Rel set.

My subs sit inside my speakers about 10 ft from the corners of the room. The also are sitting atop subtraps so they are 18inches of the floor. Room position has a big impact on room nodes. I try reducing nodes which may reduce room support. That is why I probably have them higher than most folks.

The year of waiting! Come on 2021. This year is in the tank.

Still no 20.7’s in the house. I’m considering another direction. Maybe Legacy Audio AERIS or Whisper XDS. Anyone have any impressions of those vs Maggie’s?
