Magnepan 3.7i vs 20.7

I have 10ft of the same and am very happy with them. Also with respect to stands I have heard that stuff like symposium acoustic roller blocks are good under Maggie’s. I have just small felt pads on the four corners of my Maggie’s so I can easily slide them on a hardwood floor. I move them around a lot depending on company.

The Maggies 20.7 are finally set up! They image like nothing else. I don’t trully understand how people don’t HAVE to run a sub with them. They maybe play to 70 hz in my room. They the fall off a mountain top. My room is bass vacuum I suppose. Wall to wall carpet. Not much room treatment at all.

Glad you finally got a set

Get more hours on them and the panels will listen up a bit. My drop to 31 hz. Use some tracks from the artist Bass Mechanik. He has a variety of albums that play low hz At 1 hz at a time to get a better idea Of the depth.

on REW in my space I get to 25hz before it dives like a cliff. However I do wish for more impact in the lower midbass and bass region.

I can’t believe how much better the 20.7 is vs the 3.7i in my system and room. Holy cow, it was ALL worth the wait!

Wonderful!

I am jealous. A large and properly treated room makes Maggie’s sing. Unfortunately, my 1.7’s are in a small, but dedicated, room and do not give all a BHK stack can give them. Speaker hybrids that have planar top and mids, cone bass, and DSP might be the answer. Tired of waiting for the FR 30.

I owned 20s before… even Magnepan said to brake them in. Leave them alone, let them break in and learn the speaker. I would do this way way before even considering a sub. You can spend a year optimizing their placement to maximize imaging and tonal balance. Only then would I even consider adding a sub.

They are both a nightmare and a power given their interaction with a room. Tweak your window coverings… close/open the door. On and on…

I Guess I should be glad my system is in my basement and the left speaker is under a wrapped support I-beam. The 3.7i clears the support by only 5". Since the 20.7s are 8" taller, they’d never fit so I can’t have them. I added the DWM bass panels to mine to add some extra bass to the system.

Did the 20.7 sound best in the same position in your room as the 3.7i or did you have to move them around???

Just went through the struggle of moving from 1.7s to something that was room friendly. After 35 years of tolerating Magepan monoliths in our living room, my wife was receptive to finding something smaller in stature. We considered open baffle and other options. I really believe the real challenge was the limited choices for auditioning, especially during COVID. We just purchased a used pair of Revel 228BE after auditioning them in the home of an audiophile. He had a smaller well treated room and was planning on moving to the Revel 226BE (Much more affordable). Recognizing the significant retail price difference, we are hearing sounds in our recordings that were not there previously on the 1.7s, especially the shimmer on percussions. I thought we would miss the massive Magnepan soundstage, but we are not.

Glad that speaker switch worked for you. I don’t think that Maggie’s are the last word in definition or imaging but what is exceptional is the the top to bottom seamlessness and natural presentation, particularly with vocals and acoustic instruments.
A $2k they are a steal, despite all the known “conditions” required.

Well stated

They are 1.5’ more off front wall and 2’ farther apart. Less tow in. Tweeters outside.

So 3’ off side walls ( closer then the 3.7 ) and 5.5’ off front wall. Room is 24’ wide X 24.3’ long

Excellent feedback, THANKS

I also have tweeters on the outside. I find that if I have the tweeters inside the bass gets to much support from the room. I also think it naturally provides a wider soundstage. Mileage will vary according to rooms and preferences. Maggies are flexible and let you shape your soumdfield. Also found that diffusion not absorption is the sound treatment play.

What diffusers do you use?

I have a combination of 16 " ACS tube traps in the corners with the diffuser portion sitting out. I will get home and send a variety of pictures to show the various combinations. I also use gik polyfusers.

@darrenv1070 I just posted a long post with a bunch of pictures and comments on the various treatments I used. It should come up as Acoustic Treatments for Magnapans - Diffusion not Absorption. Not sure how long it will take to post. Have fun with your 20.7s
