That absolutely best I tried is the RAL cable from Brad pay and wait, or the WWPS7 as second prize with the RAL in first Place. Inakustik makes a Referenz HDMI but I have not tried it but always wanted to, @Somppsa likes Inakustik HDMI
auts…that cat7 is 160€ cable here in EU which sounds more reasonable for a cat cable.
And as vmax says, that hdmi is good but not class a category IMO. I would have bought RAL long time ago but you all know how difficult it is to deal with unicorns.
I pass the ball to @vee and hope he will share his thoughts about various Inakustik cables when he has made his opinion of them.
Hi all,
Well - got myself a LPS 1.2 and am happy with the additional benefits - albeit I feel the Matrix alone set the groundwork there.
I do have one issue that I can’t seem to resolve.
I can’t seem to play DSD (DoP) files via the HDMI cable to the DSD. I can play them via the bridge - no problems - and they show up as DoP.
Via the Matrix - no go.
The USB cable from the MacBook pro running Roon is a short Audioquest Cinnamon that I had lying around. The HDMI cable is a vanilla type of cable 4K capable. I have tried several cheap HDMI cables and the same result. PCM files play perfectly. Green light on the Matrix.
On a DSD file, the Matrix light is Blue - indicating that the file is dsd. So to me this indicates that the dad is getting to the Matrix - but the DSD does nothing with it. A red indicator on the DSD screen indicates no signal.
I have also tried the USB cable that came with the Matrix - same result.
I tries with/without the LPS - same result.
The Matrix switches are all off.
I have also done a bit perfect test via the Matrix - all OK - Bitperfect displayed.
Do I need a better quality HDMI cable as it seems that all signals get to the DSD but the DSD can’t seem to lock on or identify the stream coming from the Matrix for dsd files.
I’m sorry you’re having this problem. I’m using a Roon Nucleus+ and converting everything to DSD 128 DOP. The Matrix light is green and my Direct Stream shows DOP and DSD 128. I don’t have any native DSD files however. I’m using an AQ Mocha HDMI from the Matrix to the DAC. All switches on the Matrix are as shipped which I believe is all off. I hope you can get it figured out.
That is disappointing! The only thing that comes to mind is the DSD rate you’re feeding the DS DAC. Although the manual says that the Matrix can handle up to DSD512, I think the DS DAC can only handle up to DSD128 into its I2S port. Can you confirm the DSD rate that’s being fed to the Matrix from the file you’re trying to play? Is Roon sending the bit stream? Is it doing any upsampling?
Oops! I just realized that the Matrix shining a blue LED means the input to it is DoP. It shines white when Native DSD is the input stream.
Hi @andynotadam
If you convert PCM to DSD or play native DSD, the light should turn white and your DS DAC should display DSD 64 or DSD 128. The leftmost dip switch on the Matrix, called DoP to Native must be on 1. Also, to prevent DSD files from swapping right channel with left channels, you could turn the middle dip switch called IIS Reverse to 1
Hi @KevinA
Blue LED means DoP, you may want to try native DSD route using the sip switch and see if it turns white. Also, a restart of the whole chain may help. Good luck.
This isn’t required because the I2S ports on the Matrix and DS DAC use the same wiring convention.
This won’t affect the colour of the LED. The LED’s colour depends only on the input. Additionally, there’s no need for the Matrix to convert from DoP to native DSD because the DS DAC accepts DoP input. This was discussed sometime back in this topic. If memory serves, Ted Smith wrote that pre-converting DoP to DSD doesn’t save any processing effort on the part of the DS DAC.
Please try to rip a file from SACD into DSD, then into PCM, play both via the Matrix and see if channels get inverted. If they don’t, then something is wrong my my system and that of another forum member who drew my attention to this
I was under the impression that his source was Nucleus, which sends native DSD upon conversion from PCM. My fault. And you’re right, there is no benefit whatsoever to converting PCM to DSD then feeding that to DS DAC. I have tried that for a while, but returned to playing files as is.
Hi MikeK,
“Problem Solved”.
The hint that you gave that the DSD can only handle up to DSD128 for the HDMI input was all it took. I looked at the file that I was playing via roon - DSD64… Hmm. In Roon - checking Device Setup for the Matrix - advanced settings - and there we have the DSD set higher at DSD256. (Aha Aha!)
So Roon’s DSD Playback Strategy (for the Matrix) set to ‘DSD over PCM’ (DoP) was converting the DSD64 file to DoP [256]. Hence the DirectStream Dac (via HDMI) couldn’t recognise the signal.
Thanks for the answers and hints! Knowing where to look is half the battle!
Cheers
Kevin
I understand and what you wrote is fair enough! I guess all I’m saying is that I think using the IIS Reverse switch is treating the symptom and not the root cause of the channel reversal issue you describe.
Today my Inakustik Referenz USB 2.0 1.5m cable arrived. I took it out of the box and disconnected my Stealth Audio USB cable, all nice a broke in, out of the system and replaced it with the new just out of the box cable. I am listening now. So far I hear nothing good or bad. Too soon to tell but I am certain it isn’t magical yet.
Nothing good or bad, Isnthat equivalent to nothing better or worse?
It will be interesting to hear your conclusions but so far you’re mirroring Ed Momkus DaGoGo review versus the Stealth USB. He needed a lonwhile to perceive differences to the Inakustik.
