I didn’t care for his reviews, but I like Mikey a lot.
Sort of like she was a horrible waitress, but fun to look at.
I liked that home video for the very first part, his outdoor power supply. It reminded me of good times we had in our home in Texas. Unimaginable. In The Netherlands where all low voltage (230 V) home supply cables are buried in the ground and the mains incoming boxes are panels from floor to sealing next to the front door in the hallway. Built that way due to Dutch National Code.
My takeaway however were the fact that his system improved with the smart meter and 2 grounding rods and that if you don’t have your power supply and it’s grounding sorted you may spend 20k € on a power conditioner or filter but it’s never gonna be the real thing.
I checked our 6 years old solar panel system as 2 of our Apple power bricks died at the same time in the same outlet close to where the incoming cable from the panels enter the house (from the soil through the concrete floor / foundation).
It appears the to be an Al Cheapo system without voltage and current surge protection and the panels and frames are not grounded. It was an eye opener to check our National Code to read that such measures have just become mandatory in 2022.
Remarkable: the environmentalists have become so powerful in our country that they managed to sacrifice safety and power grid integrity for affordable solar panel systems. Perhaps for the right reasons as it helped paying our electricity bill considerably.
So, my next investment is: taking the time to do the engineering myself with support of experts and replace that crappy system with something decent. It helps that todays panels are literally double so powerful than the 2016 generation. And am I happy that I dug in an oversized copper power cable from the DC/AC converter to the mains panel next to the front door.
I keep all the clutter in my listening room behind me. ![]()
Emoji notwithstanding, I’m serious. While my setup isn’t as pristine and symmetrical as many of the ones our community members post, I like to think that the portion of the room I see while listening is closer to disorder than clutter. It’s actually a long term work in progress, but my pace of work is so glacial, most normal human beings, like my wife, view it as stasis.
Me too.
The pile of boxes, Hi-Fi detritus and bits and bobs behind the couch/listening position is fairly embarrassing.

My father was a lineman. It always tickled me when we traveled to different parts of the country how he’d go outside and look at the electrical delivery systems and judge how different they were than in Northern Illinois. The beauty of living in a federalist republic-every state does things a little differently.
Even indoors differs substantially. Illinois requires(d) all wiring to be in conduit in metal boxes. Here in Ohio, it’s Romex all the way down. Which made me very happy when I finished our basement.
Hi Mike, long time no speak. In the Netherlands we stick vinyl insulated wire in PVC tubing. We put that in brick walls but also in 1.5 x 3 (in The Netherlands every thing is a bit smaller) wood framed sheet rock walls.
Now 50 km eastbound our German neighbors do the wiring different. There ain’t no right or wrong. It all seems to work.
The Brian Wilson story in the middle of this video is so great.
Personally, I find his audio reviews utterly useless and dreadfully put together, but his music reviews are amongst the best anywhere, and incredibly well informed. I’d happily share a bowl of chicken soup and a salt beef sandwich with him, as long as he didn’t talk about audio and dragged a comb across his head.
Some of us are dishevelled as a style choice ![]()
I thoroughly enjoyed Mikey and his tour through his house. I loved the anecdotal information and I couldn’t have smiled more. He doesn’t need to apologize for spending his money on audio. As for his opinions on audio gear, I always enjoy his perspective.
A large industrial push broom would make quick work of that desk. ![]()
I’m sure it took years to achieve that level of clutter(organization). A simple push broom won’t make a difference. It’ll reconfigure itself while you sleep.![]()
