Jesus, this is the mother of all mods and the kind of intervention, I’m always curious about how it would sound if you could just reverse them with a klick. Could be a surprise in both directions after so many changes I guess.
How would you rate the difference compared to a firmware change?
Each of the modifications brings something. These cheap and easy-to-apply power modifications greatly improve the dynamics of the sound. Start with 220 uF capacitors. Look at the photo where I soldered them to the diode and voltage regulator. There are large surfaces that will hold the capacitors well. The influence of this capacitor gives much to think about the quality of SMD capacitors.
I also encourage you to buy 10 sheets
You will not regret it. I had bought 30 sheets before, and yesterday I ordered another 25 for my friends. Unfortunately the Mouser currently has a poor selection of Nichicon KZ capacitors.

Although less sophisticated than the mods above I get my modded Directstream with Keces P3 power supply any day now. I am very excited. I don’t know what the purple fuses will offer in both dac and power supply but they should be of some benefit. I consider myself lucky to have been able to get one of the last JKRichards power supply boards.

The output transformers function as in any DSD.
If I remember correctly, the resistance of the windings is 70 Ω. R 705-708 resistors add 120 Ω, they are installed only to create an output attenuator. Would you like an additional resistor between the output of the power amplifier and the loudspeaker?
We want to squeeze the highest quality with DSD, and lowering the output impedance favors it.
To begin with, eliminate the R705-708 resistors. I can hear this modification.
Again, I encourage everyone to install Nichicon KZ (UKZ) 220 uF capacitors (100 uF is also OK, voltage 25 V is enough) in parallel to the C700.
Which Permaloy and/or Amorphous transformers did you try in the DS? Does anybody even make Amorphous transformers other than Lundahl?
And how did you mount these, since these almost certainly cannot just be dropped-in as was the case with the better Edcors?

Have you taken into account the bandwidth of the new transformers? Ted has stated more than once that the leakage inductance in the Edcors was deliberately used to form a part of the passive low-pass filter circuit on the DS. So throwing an otherwise superior transformer into the circuit has the potential to make its output filtering significantly worse.

The OPT is supposed to form part of the low-pass filter to lower the ultrasonic noise. I has nothing to do with filtering audible frequencies.

I was merely trying to engage you in a discussion to understand if you had taken the bandwidth into account. I was not attempting to either embarrass or troll you.
I’m actually inclined to believe you when you say that the Lundahl’s sound better. But unless its bandwidth is pretty limited, I suspect that these may measure worse in this application. But most of us didn’t purchase this DAC for its superb measurements. So that point is probably irrelevant to many of us. ![]()
Would you be so kind as to post a photo of how you installed these transformers? The lundahls are shaped very differently, so I’m very curious to see how the DS fits together with those installed. ![]()

Oh no! I was digging your posts @Turbotk. I was thinking how interesting it might be to get a second DS and mod it like yours and compare it to the 4400 and analog board mods on my DS. A great project for next winter.
