Modding the DirectStream DAC MKI

Happy Cake Day @adriaan !

I REALLY doubt it’s possible to remove the supply board. It doesn’t just supply voltage, but also has other critical circuitry, such as SD card slot. Just from that, you know there is communication occurring to and from the board.

Yes, you can feed 5 vdc to the USB PCB with an external psu.
On J4 ribbon cable connector to USB PCB pins 1&14 carries the +5vdc, splice out the copper trace and splice in your external lpsu +5
OR, replace C16, with KZ x 2 at 1000uf/25vdc, and splice out copper trace at J3 at pins 1&14, since voltage regulator U4 supplies both USB PCB and front display, use the spare U2 to supply 5vdc to front display.

Happy Cake Day @adriaan! Ten years, you should get a whole cake to yourself!

Happy cake day!

O.K. fellow tweakers, you “shielders” in particular, I just picked up the latest design, “Shakti Air”, of the “Shakti Electromagnetic Stabilizer” stone on sale at The Cable Company.

With all of the recent posts about placing custom-sized pieces of sheets of shielding materials on internal components and the inside surfaces of equipment cases, I thought I would try a more “lazy” approach and see if I could get beneficial results from one of these “Shakti Stones” (SS).

So…I am looking for placement tips from experienced users of the SS. My initial candidates for trying this out are an Anthem AVM50v 2 Pre/Pro, a PS Audio DMP transport, a PS Audio DS Sr. DAC and a Sony Playstation, which serves as our primary on ramp/player for streaming movies and TV content on a Panasonic Plasma (audio from the Sony PS is via digital cable to the Anthem Pre/Pro.

Of course I will be performing my own empirical experimenting, but I am admittedly looking for a shortcut recommendation or two to get the ball rolling.

So, if you have used an SS on one or more of the listed kit, where did you perceive the best, beneficial impact?

TIA.

Have you considered under your pillow? Maybe the Shielding Fairy will replace it with a Stealth cable.

@Duncan_Taylor has mentioned near the toroidal transformer in his stone experiments.
I believe you must tune it to this song for maximum affect.

I have it centered over the toroidal transformer of my Stellar PP3 at the moment.

Have just been listening - not A/B’ing. Will do some w/ and w/o repeated listening of segments of tracks later on, once I have several hours of “normal” listening behind me.

Thanks.

Well, I checked under my pillow this morning and the dang, cheapskate tooth fairy apparently swiped my Shakti AIR, b/c all I found was a quarter!

@Vmax don’t forget to try it over the display!

@Duncan_Taylor, care to be more specific?

TIA.

I have just recently had my Directstream fully modded with Edcor XS4400 transformers and JKRichards power supply board with a Keces P3 power supply. I had purple fuses put in the Directstream and Keces and I got a Furutech NCF(R) iec installed on the Directstream. I am loving my new sound and wonder about other people’s experience with these types of mods. I am loving my new sound.

Who did the mods?

Dan Santoni
Excellent work from a good man. He is legendary in Canada.

I have the transformers and JKRichards power board mod. Didn’t change the fuse yet or mod the power in.

The sound is truly spectacular, to the point that there’s nothing on the market today that I would change it to. Just nothing that is clearly better in every single aspect as well as reasonably priced.

Which power supply are you using to the
RKRichards board?
