hello,
I have a BHK250 amp (I purchased back in March of 2024) that’s driving a pair of Revel F36’s and it sounds great. I recently hooked up my Bose 901’s in place of the Revels… I know, I know, lol… I like switching things up.
Anyway, the amp has been tripping/going into protection when I get around midpoint on the volume. Since the 901’s use an EQ, I tried the EQ with the Revels and again it caused the amp to trip. I bought a capacitor replacement kit for the EQ, but then after replacing them I realized all of the originals measured fine.
I try installing the EQ between the preamp and the BHK250 amp also between the streamer and the preamp and same thing. All my connections are nice and tight. Triple checked everything
Any idea why the Bose 901 EQ would cause the BHK250 amp to shut down?
Have you tried the Bose EQ in the system completely flat without any adjustments? I suggest trying that first, then push the bass adjustment button without making other changes first, and see if that one is the culpret.
Yes I just did, with a flat EQ. I’m able to crank it up a little more but still gose on protection mode. It’s definitely a bass issue. It happens with heavy bass tracks. It’s not the end of the world. Just want to make sure there’s nothing wrong with the BHK250amp. I’m definitely not keeping the speakers with this amp. Like I said I was just playing and I ran into this problem and I’m thinking this amp should be able to handle these speakers.
I eventually will be upgrading the speakers to the Aspen FR10 hopefully.
Glad the issue is found.
Adding EQ, especially bass, can add a huge amount of power drain on an amp.
The FR10’s are nice speakers to aspire to. I have the FR20’s, which are my destination speakers, and after a year and a half, am still impressed with how good they sound. As my system keeps improving in 2024, the FR20’s keep responding nicely with each improvement.
What Series are the 901’s. I ran several Series 1 & 2 901’s off of PS Audio M700’s several years ago with no issues. Whether it was the original refreshed Analog Active Factory EQ or the miniDSP that replaced it. I’m also running them off of Orchard Audio Ultra Amplifiers with no issues and sometimes for fun, I’ll connect my Black Ice Audio F100’s up to them. Also no issues.
Hi joe!
They are series V, like I mentioned in my post before I tried connecting them different configuration and NG. I do have a Denon DRA-685 ( 100 wpc) Work fine with the speakers and the EQ. For some reason the BHK250 does not like the 901S, I’m going to say maybe it’s too sensitive??
The only thing I’m having trouble understanding is that the BKH250 is rated for 250 wpc. And the old cheap Denon it’s rated for 100 wpc and it have no problem handling the 901s???
Thanks, Papo
