My little rant about Audirvana and Roon

so, kinda similar to roon… server to streamer to dac

which streamer?

Do you use Roon? If you do, are you having problems? If you don’t, why inform all who do about your take on it? It’s a dark and not useful take.

using iFi NeoStream as streamer (not using its dac, would have likely saved money with Eversolo but it was not sold at time of NeoStream purchase). likely, most of money tech in the NeoStream is for the streamer while its dac is iFi proprietary…did a good job, but moved on. if PSA AirLens is superior streamer, would consider, but will more likely wait for proof or a totally new system.

(using iFi PowerElite, a SQ step up, and the included galvanic isolation box that comes with the NeoStream)

I do and experienced these problems with my friends over the last couple of months. So why bother when you are fine with it? The links clearly show there are long term problems as well as more severe ones over 2+ months. Hopefully they somehow will get fixed or the Harman team is providing resources to get this done.

You seem to be alone here with having problems. Sure, on the Roon Forum lots of people are sad. Here it’s pretty much you.

You are pretty much the most happy Roon user here which is of course fine

I use a Grimm MU1 or a Pink Faun 2.16 as Roon Server and Streamer.
Perhaps that could be a reason why?

A hardwired internet connection to the server / streamer / storage device is also very important. The Roon control point does not need it however.

Ah likely! The Grimm MU1 is one of the best in the world and the Pink Faun also great.

Prior to Roon I was running JRiver.

I first ran Roon on a small Euphony Server/Streamer. What was interesting about Euphony is it wasn’t limited to Roon, it had it’s own player called “Stylus”. People seem to like to believe that Roon damages the sound. With a Euphony Server and the Euphony OS you could easily switch from Roon to Stylus and hear the difference for yourself. In my experience I liked both, but preferred the Roon Interface.

Then I switched to the Pink Faun which is basically a very robust and complex power supply with PC parts in it. The output devices, I2S or USB or Ethernet were available in various levels. Simple and cheap with good clocks on the board. Or expensive with GREAT clocks on board. It was a nice step up.

Then I started hearing about a device that “Solves Roon”. You get the Roon Interface but better sound due to custom processing done on an FPGA chip. This of course was the Grimm MU1. Once I had that there was no looking back.

I experienced several systems that were based on the Roon Nucleus+ and I never liked what I heard. It makes no sense that a hardware device created by the creators of Roon was so weak. But that is how I called it.

Lately, due to processor enhancements quite a few people are switching to Mac Minis. I used to chide people for using Mac gear for audio. Now I am using it myself. Not as a Roon server, but as a Roon Endpoint.

I think many improvements are made continuously for Roon. I am a bit worried about it’s future but we shall see.

I am sad people are having problems but it reminds me of the Apple versus PC world. Apple tightly controlled the hardware that would run their UNIX like OS. They could control so many variables and keep things working well. On the PC side there were nothing but variables. 500 choices for motherboards, Graphics Cards, Memory, etc. So many variables that had to be dealt with. No two manufacturers used the same hardware. Similar, but no where near exact.

So Roon has to work with PC and Mac and Euphony and various Unix OSes. That results in lots of issues. But you have stated people are having issues with Nucleus and Nucleus+ machines. I believe you. That just shouldn’t be though.

I think the environment on the Roon Forum is so awful you can’t come away with too many happy feelings visiting there. I am proof that you can easily avoid all that and still use and enjoy Roon. Not having a daily reminder that people are suffering seems nice.

I first thought perhaps you were a “Never Roon” guy. My apologies for thinking that.
I wish you well!

Thank you for your kind words! I very much can follow all your views. And would also love to have a Grimm MU1 if it wasn’t that expensive
As you mentioned it’s so far quite a challenge to get Roon right as even with Nucleus and Nucleus+ machines users are having problems. What the reason for that is and to have a more solid experience will hopefully be solved soon. Though I have also worries like you and others about where things are heading to since the Harman Audio takeover. Let’s keep fingers crossed.
And I absolutely will stay away from the Roon forum. It’s really awful and and many user dropped out too. But glad we have this forum here to share insights and treat each other nicely.

Agreed.

This is one of the best groups, if not the best group, there is.

I like to say it is an oasis in what is the desert of the “Interwebs”.

Cheers.

Been using Audirvāna for about a year. I tried Roon for the trial. I stream plus a collection of DSD and cd’s.
I remember trying to reorganize my collection and decided it was easier to keep what I started with: I bought Air Lens and was worried how to use.
I found Rule Number 1 (Don’t over think it).
