I do not doubt that elk. You are probably right. There was a period in his career where his vocal always sounded like it was recorded in a church. I had read he wasn’t a fan of his own voice. Damn.

They were pioneers in many ways.

Even though he was good at it and liked the effect, my understanding is Lennon despised actually doing double tracking.

I have Lennon’s “Shaved Fish” album [His solo hits up until 1975]. I’m reasonably sure that every track has Lennon using reverb or doubling. Never gave it a thought until you had mentioned it.

Phil Collins actually double-tracked his DRUMS on the early Genesis prog records. Which, if you hear those parts, is beyond amazing.
