They don’t have to be.
Tell that to my son and his fiance’…
After putting 10dB whirlwind attenuators between my BHK pre and BHK300s, as was suggested on this thread, and running for a few hours, I am getting unbelievable SQ coming from a dead silent background! It’s like using a Mcintosh, that sounds really good!
Glad it worked out. I have used both SE and Balanced Rothwell’s for years to solve gain issues and never noticed any sound degradation.
Thanks for the suggestion
Ron, I feel a tad bad for you. The Janus is opening up alot already. Oh, I couldn’t resist since I had them laying around. I replaced the 6922 in the output stage with BHK Tungs from Upscale. Sweet!
Congrats to you. That’s so generous of you; I hope your son and his fiancé are appreciative.
Ron, I moved the jumper in the Janus for -12 DB. Seems to helped a tad with tube hiss ( 93 DB speakers ). But the tubes don’t seem as happy. Did you have any odd noise with the -12 setting? The unit I bought was NOS, and I think Aesthitix made some changes since. Software, and tubes are different now I read. Does anyone know what tubes they go with now?
Leaning toward sending it in for update, black panel, trigger output mod and signature upgrade in June. What is odd, I am now getting similar noise as I did with the BHK. It’s not the amps, with preamp off it’s not there. I will try to find out if it’s the other gear? Maybe the wifi?
Not sure which factory tubes they are using currently, there is a great thread on Aesthetix tube rolling on the audiogon forums.
Also, Andy at Vintage Tube Services is a wealth of knowledge on tubes for Aesthetix gear, you may want to give him a call…

I emailed Andy.
If the Janus keeps improving, I can say I think I have a preference…
Seems like I have a failing or noisy tube in the Janus. Swapped out the Sovtek 6922 installed a Gold Lion from BHK OEM amp. Noise is far less. I am less than impressed with the Sovtek tubes. I thought I read somewhere that they now run JJ’s? I plan to email or call to ask on Monday
Maybe this should be the Janus thread- thread name is a misnomer.
Yes. Agreed. I just started a new post.
Darrenv- thx wasn’t meant in a mean spirit- good to know some people know the diff
It’s all good.
Avoid fixed attenuators. I tried them between my Rogue RP-5 and amp… The sound gets slightly “jekko” sounding imo. I placed a Schiit SYS between the pre and amp…not one bit of sound change.
I don’t see why you are getting unbearable tube hiss with both a BHK pre and amps? Even on high efficiency speakers.
