What are the odds of some hardware updates within the DS?
Nothing in the works, there are a few minor things that could get fixed easily but even only doing them and/or updating the power supply would require new boards.
If itâs minor and a worthwhile upgrade, why not do it? Iâm sure most of us would gladly do that!
The cost of the boards and parts would be about the same as the PWD to DS upgrade so the prices of replacement boards would be about the same⌠I suspect that people would prefer a free software update instead.
Still no hardware things are ruled out. I canât give any reasonable guess as to the odds.
Sounds like a poll on this forum would make sense to judge feasibility of the hardware upgrade. Perhaps even a group buy. Get @Paul on it! What else is he doing?!?!?
I think poll has been discussed before, the forum software doesnât support it. Iâm not interested in hardware upgrade for DS DAC.
I would want to pay for a whole board upgrade maybe for a next generation DAC but not for a minor sound improvement of the current technologyâŚ
Three cheers for the forum! No polls!
Hi Ted, will this fiber connection be just bog standard single mode fiber cable?
Yep, youâll be able to cut it to what ever length you like with a cheap standard cutter (or if you are careful with a sharp knife or razor blade.) https://docs.broadcom.com/docs/pub-005213
Nice.
I wonât bug you about exactly what type of fiber cable & connector exactly (Iâm sure that will all come out in due course) but could one also get something pre-made to whatever length, like this?
No connector: I should have put this link in
Nice. Looks easy enough.
Are you recommending this optical system? I missed where it was talked about.
Itâs a feature. An optical cable connects (isolates) the 2-boxes. True perfect isolation.
Right, for the TSS though. Correct?
Correct.
Jeez, Iâm glad we got that sorted out! That POF cutter, I see it is single use per aperture only. Never knew you could do that. Another TS pearl of wisdom.
If you have a very square cut you probably donât have to polish the ends. If your cut is a little sloppy and you donât polish the ends the losses in the cable will go up a lot which may cause errors, especially for longer cables. (This is all true for TOSLink as well, but itâs just less critical there.) I suspect with the TSS you could use scissors
We just arenât going that far and the data rate isnât high these daysâŚ
Sounds like an opportunity for a Ted Smith custom fiber cable.
