Yes, also tried a FS SFP+, also does not work in the dataside of the switch, I suspect this is a software glitch in the AS8 (that’s a guess), up to now dataside and audioside are only communicating with a 1 or 1,25 gbit/s SFP installed at the dataside. (With the SFP’s I have tried anyway)
Thanks @MattSPL
Interesting series of articles and perhaps goes some way to explaining why Alvin didn’t use SFP DAC cables - this reviewer found that the expensive Melco C1 was needed in his comparisons, to hit the sound quality (chapter 4) that met his expectations. It’s not comparing technologies but qualities of technologies (and their costs).
I’ve already got the Muon Pro from my AS8 Pro to my Mac Mini (running Roon Core and BACCH4Mac). Currently running Ethernet from etherRegen to AS8 Pro but when I return from travels will test the SFP route.
Great T-shirt
Yes, it’s the same one in your picture.
Thx
Musing further, the DAC SFP that @MattSPL gave an example of is cheap enough to try for fun as against the Melco C1 version….
Maybe between my etherRegen and the AS8 Pro data side!
I look forward to hearing your findings.
I use my DAC cable between a Cisco 2960 and my AS6.
10G/SFP+ issues?
Noticed this Taiko switch that has options for SFP+ output and DAC (direct attach copper) cable
and,
Don’t know yet - I’ve travelling and only used RJ45 to the AS8 Pro before I left. I had the Ethernet from the wall (router) to etherRegen (A side only) but used the SFP of the etherRegen to link (via converter) to a generic switch with noisy connections (including wifi extender ) that I wanted to isolate from the audio signal path. Lots of things to think about!
Something I find curious about the adark DAC cable is that it doesn’t seem to differentiate between 1G and 10G (see specs)
According to those I have spoken with with experience using dac cable- it is best to use from switch to streamer. - Fiber is still needed before that point- so internally would not be the best place to use a das cable in the AS8 or SW-10pro.
By the way- I have a SW-10 pro coming and a muon pro already. How do you like the combo?
This is what I have now, and you will like it.
I have the AS8 Pro and set it up with the Muon Pro between it and my Mac Mini (BACCH4Mac, also Roon core). The AS8 Pro certainly improved the SQ over my etherRegen which I kept but placed directly upstream of the AS8 Pro.
I run USB from my Mac Mini to my PS Audio DSD Mk2, and am tempted to get an LHY USB purifier added to that link….
I’m still far from convinced that these new AS8 and SW-10 pro switches are on the Tempus/Melco level. Seems like comments so far are that it is very good but no one seems blown away.
I would hope it is WAY better than a etherRegen considering the PS and clock and fiber built in there.
Thanks for the input.
Do you happen to know if there’s any images of the Tempus internals?
My Melco S100 is for sale
good sign. Thanks…
I do not think you will be blown away by any switch! It is not a DAC, Pre, amp, or even a streamer. All I can say is SW-10 Pro blew away my SW-10/SW-6 combo. I have been listening to streaming since it got here, and I have not missed playing discs at all.
No one can tell you if Tempus, Melco, AS-8, or SW-10pro is the best at this point. By the time someone actually compares them side-by-side there will be other “best” switches showing up already.
Ask Paul this morning has a great video on what is the best.
