Older DirectStream DAC?

And that may be entirely accurate, meaning this piece was something of a steal at $3086 and change. Unfortunately, knowing it was a great deal does little to expand my budget. And that’s ok.

Totally understand…just thought it might be helpful to give at least one point of reference.

Cheers.

And I appreciate it. Information is always welcome.

Hi all - just pick up a used DS but confused by what I have received and what was in the box. The manuals that come w/ the DS include a booklet for ‘Perfectwave DirectStream DAC Upgrade Kit’ as well as Owners Reference for DirectStream Dac and Perfectwave Dac MkII. The latter looks like it was printed out and stapled together. In the Perfectwave Dac MkII manual it talkes about setting sample rates and filters that are not available on the DAC I received.

So, do I have a genuine DS DAC Sr. or something else? It was running the Redcloud firmware when I started it up and it did take the Sunlight upgrade so that was good.

Thanks for the help.

Likely a perfectwave upgraded to a Directstream. That’s what I did to mine years ago. Works perfectly. PSA still sells the kit.

Hmmmm… that was not stated in the ad so that’s a bit aggravating. Any way I can be sure?

Yes, if it looks like this, you have an Directstream from a modified perfectwave.

yep, other than the Unit ID that’s exactly what it looks like. thanks!

While frustrating it was not stated in the ad, the upgraded version has the same hardware as a later model.

You can rest assured it is functionally the same, as the innards that make it a DS Sr. DAC are swapped in for the older, PerfectWave DAC.

Please let us know what you think, after you get some of your own miles on it.

Cheers.

The only thing different in the upgraded Directream DAC and a newly built unit is the infrared sensor. I have a Perfectwave Transport the uses the same sensor as your DAC. I have never seen any difference in the use of the romte with either style sensor. You definitely have an Authenic Directstream DAC. Enjoy it.
