Only Partial Decoding of MQA with the Direct Stream DAC/ Bridge II system

Hey guys. I got it working!!! I feel like a fool. I had the wrong username in the Tidal app with MConnect. That’s why I had the error messages popping up when I hit play for a song. I wasn’t really logged in to Tidal. The DAC is awesome! Everything works fast and pretty smooth. MQA files sound amazing through this DAC and Bridge2. Thanks you guys for trying to help me out here very appreciated. Thanks PSaudio Techs for your input. Now I’m enjoying the music.

Unrelated but this reminded me of a call I put into Gateway computers tech support about 20 years ago. Our desktop computer was working fine but suddenly stopped turning on one day, it was completely unresponsive. After trying everything I could think of for 20min to fix the issue I called Gateway. After waiting on hold for an additional 15min the first question the tech asked me was “Is the computer plugged in?” I got down out of my chair and inspected the outlet, then I hung up the phone without saying a word in absolute shame; I’m sure the tech knew exactly that they had fixed the issue at that moment!

Ted, I just hooked up an DSD JR with redcloud and an updated bridge and am running tidal through the coax output of a bluesound node into the DSD. I’m controlling Tidal via my bluesound app on my iphone. Instead of indicating “mqa” next to a master recording tidal now displays HR.

The dsd shows the song is playing at 44, not higher and no mqa indicator is lit.

Is this typical and is the only way to get full MQA unfolding on the DSD jr is by using the network connection and controlling Tidal via mconnect app on my phone?

thanks- the DSD sounds awesome regardless and blows away the bluesound as a DAC.

Hi Paul, does this mean that the only way the bridge 11 in a dsd jr will fully unfold MQA is by using the network connection and streaming tidal thru the mconnect app?

I tried using the coax out of my bluesound into the dsd jr and tidal thru the bluesound app now shows “HR” next to what should be a master MQ song (it would have previously shown MQA).

thanks

The Bridge is the only way to have the DS Jr do MQA unfolding. I can’t answer bridge questions since I don’t use it. Hopefully someone who has some experience doing what you’re doing can help there.

I just hooked up a new DSD Jr today and temporarily ran the coax out from my bluesound to the DSD. When I use the blusound app on my iphone to feed Tidal and choose an MQA song the song no longer shows MQA but now shows HR. The DSD Jr continues to show decoding at 44 and does not show MQA.

Is the only way to get full MQA on the DSD to feed it only thru a hardwire network connection and to use Mconnect app on ny phone to select the DSD and set Tidal via Mconnect to pass full MQA ?

Your Node 2 should only output full MQA through it’s analog outputs.

The ONLY way to get fully unfolded MQA via the DSD Sr and DSD Jr is through the Bridge II. So, anything connected the the DSD using an input connection other than through the Bridge II will not provided fully unfolded MQA. Mconnect used to be the only software tool capable of delivering MQA that could be fully unfolded, but I have heard that it is now also possible to get fully unfolded MQA via Room, but I can’t substantiate that since I am not a Room subscriber.

I believe when you set it to fixed output, MQA out to external DAC it will transfer it out for an external DAC to finish converting it.

Well if you are only getting 16/44 through the coax output then apparently not. Try using the USB input but I don’t suspect it will be different. Not sure the purpose of the DS Jr. if you were going to use the Node to stream. While mConnect would not be my first choice in streaming software based on my trial of the Node 2 several years ago the Blusound app was no better.

I just used the bluesound today as a temporary set up; I plan to stream via ethernet connection to the dsd jr and use mconnect for Tidal MQA. I guess I amy also need to use roon to access my ripped cd folder on a NAS drive but not sure. Can Mconnect access a music folder on a network too (instead of using roon)? thanks

Meant to add that the DS made a night and day improvement in sound, imaging, bass - everything the minute I used it instead of the Bluesound- wow, it sounds great !

I don’t have a NAS drive but I do have a Music folder on a laptop in another room with a couple of hundred downloaded live concerts and Mconnect finds and plays them with no problem.

If you don’t have an ethernet connection in your room and don’t want to run the wiring try a quality WiFi extender with an output jack to run a wired connection to the DS Jr. I have been using one since I first got the Lumin last year and it has worked flawlessly and I get well in excess of 100 mps from it. If you get it from Amazon and it doesn’t work in your situation you can send it back.

Yes, that’s correct, the Bridge is the only device inside our DACs capable of doing a full unfold.

In any event the dsd jr sounds incredible thru my pass equip into focal 1028’s

I can verify that. Bridge II input is the only way to get fully unfolded, decoded MQA, and the only two paths are directly, using the Mconnect Control app, or Roon. I have and use both, and they both work as advertised.

This is correct. I have the Vault 2 and have it set to fixed output with non-MQA external DAC. The Vault does the first unfold to 24/96 but that’s all I get as it is feeding an SGCD through coax.
