Just watched Paul’s YouTube discussion of using an Oppo and not being able to send info through to an external dac and get the DSD layer off of SACDs. How’s that for a run-on sentence?
Because I am using the external HDMI/MHL Interface Audio I2S/DSD/Optical/Coaxial HDMI (into PSAudio “Junior”) am I getting the DSD layer?
If you are using the 12S HDMI input into your DS Jr via an external interface, you are getting the SACD layer. Your Oppo should report it as playing. This is how my Oppo interfaces with a DS DAC Sr.
Paul didn’t mention the Video HDMI to I2S HDMI Chinese Adapters that a bunch of us here use (there a BIG thread/topic on them. Simply buy it, connect to your HDMI Video out and then I2S input of whatever DAC you have that supports it.
Just slightly off-topic, there is another way to access the DSD data stream from the transport section of a number of old-model players, including the Oppo 103. There’s a ‘Copper’ magazone article on the topic (Down the Rabbit Hole of SACD Ripping and DSD Extraction – PS Audio).
Basically, the microprocessor chip used in these players could be (re-)programmed to divert the DSD bit stream (after decoding from the SACD format) out through the ethernet (or wireless) port to a PC. The receiving program in the PC stores the data stream as a .dsf file.
The process is a bit fiddly but it’s worked for me from an old Sony Blu-Ray player.
