By the way, I run two class A amps into the P20, which makes it function at around 70% usage continuous, and it gets fairly warm.
I have noticed that it makes some faint clicking noises when it warms up and cools down.
Mostly inaudible unless the room is very quiet.
Has anyone noticed that too ?
Hey Richard, sorry for the late reaction. If I could do it all over again I would’ve been a pilot.
It looks like there’s an update pending for your P20 @Phil. I am not familiar with the clicking noises. Is it like an exhaust pipe when it cools down…? Or like relays clicking…? Mine is by far not running at 70%, not even half of that. With what amps are you heating your room, may I ask…?
I get those noises also.
I believe it is the heat sinks expanding and contracting.
@ronaldwanders - my apologies, I thought you said you were a pilot. Yeah, I worked at United Technologies Research Center and my little pilot brother picked me up once in the lobby for lunch. He was talking big about GE turbines… like he knew anything about turbines… I forgot more about planes than he learned… UTRC is on the same campus as Pratt & Whitney and I had to tell him to shut up… too funny…
Yes, I get those noises too. I don’t know what they are… I figured it just adds to the P20 mistique. Also, from my recliner it is just too easy to rationalize. I got my system sounding so good to me, if it ain’t messing w/ SQ… Richard is just working another G&T w/ twist of lime, not lemon…
I’m using Shunyata Research Sigma digital interconnects and they are great. I just can’t stretch myself to paying $5000 for one of their power cables.
@Brodric - dude, it is all about swim lanes, I thought I made that clear… I love my SR Anaconda power cable after I retired my AC12… using the Nordost Valhalla 2 HDMI. My next rig I want to A/B the SR digital. Went to usedcable.com to pick up the SR Anaconda CX (1.8m, 20A) for $1040 delivered. I just wait for the swim lane #4 rotary club members to have a reason to trade up to Sigma NR and I get their drippings… I’ts not easy being cheap… got to work at it… I’m hoping to scoot under the swin lane #4 rope… we’ll see… coach caught me swimming in that lane during practice… it was ugly…
Really? I must have missed that announcement. Last I was told they hadn’t decided, and to just assume it wasn’t going to happen, but if it did happen, take it as a pleasant surprise.
I prefer to swim in lane 4. Apparently the outside lanes are slower.
@Brodric - yeah, swim lane #4 are for the rotary club… yeah, website says summer on the power plant… I liked tracking P20 data, kind of made me feel like a big shot, impotent…
Like relays, or metal expanding or contracting because of the heat.
The handles get pretty warm too.
Amps are two Plinius SA 103s bridged as monoblocs, driving B&W 800 D2s.
Thank you @st50maint, that is reassuring and I think you are right : heatsinks and maybe some metal inside expanding and contracting.
Rarely happens when I leave the amps in class AB, or once the P20 is warm.
Thank you for sharing, @cardri.
I am glad that it is not a defect of my unit.
I am a (hobby) pilot. I meant to say that I would have liked to be a professional pilot. Freight, not passengers. More different and shorter flights, more work, more adventure… Maybe bush pilot in the near future, who knows…
And very little pay with lousy hours.
