Let me go to work on this and it makes perfect sense. Thanks for the help!
The Good news: I was able to run my playlist of different resolutions from my Innuos Zenith Mk III through USB for about a week straight and the resolution for each track showed correctly. No going blank or getting stuck.
The Bad news: I selected the Streamer input and the Roon app on my phone (android) is no longer seeing the PMG DAC as a choice for audio output. I tried rebooting my phone and power cycling the DAC.
Is there anyone else having a problem with Roon?
Under settings on the DAC, I selected check for new Streamer firmware and it never responds. Is the connection to PS Audio down? I am using the hard wired ethernet connection on the DAC.
Perhaps it is the phone app. I’m running Roon via my laptop with no problems.
I had a P12 on which one of the outputs went bad. Sent in for replacement under warranty returned with top replaced cockeyed. Returned to Boulder with specific comment on QC issues - returned with screw rattling around the inside! Refunded. But if there is one consistent issue that plagued PSA during the 13 years I had PSA equipment that differentiated the company being good rather than great was the consistently poor quality control in construction (the sticking CD trays) and operation (rarely SQ) leaving customer service to cover for the dysfunctional QC efforts.
This does happen. Mine keeps getting tossed out of roon. to fix I reboot (hard) the device. it shows back up and the Audio section and you HAVE to re-enable it. PSA said once its certified it should not happen any more. Its a bit of a pain. seems every few days it drops. Hopefully that will be coming soon.
I did power cycle the PMG DAC and it still does not show in Roon as a device to be enabled.
Does the streamer input show as green? you have a correct IP address assigned? if so I am not sure why your roon server would not see it.
Long shot but check if you have the latest version of Roon on your phone. You can delete and reinstall the app, which will update it to the latest.
Is all now good with the 512 if you are not a Roon user ?
This is discussed much on this thread. Other options are available.
Hi Paul,
I have the MK2 DAC, an Airlens, and a Stellar Gold Pre (which I preferred to the BHK Pre is a side-by-side before deciding on which pre to get). Can I assume your view is the same for that combo—that the PMG 512 alone beats the pants off it?
Thanks and best regards - Bob
I’m a Roon user. I received my 512 eight days ago and have been using it since it came. I stream Roon via a Roon Nucleus, and control via a laptop. Roon had no problem connecting, and has functioned with no glitches since then.
Hi Paul, I‘ve since 2 weeks your new PS PMG PRE and the DAC, which sounds really great. The sound quality is amazing. Congrats to you and your team.
But I‘m still suffering with display issues. The pre is quite stable, I made only 1 times a hardware reset to restore the display, which is now fine and withouty problems, but the DAC display is problematic. Now, more or less every day, I‘ve to switch it off and on, with the main switch. I‘ve attached a photo where you can see what happened now.
For sure, when I made the main switch reset everything is fine. But this could not the final solution.
So, my question: are you going to develop a new firmware which solve this issues with the display?
Hi Werner, yes, of course, if there’s a problem like this we will figure it out and fix it through a firmware update. Of course. I have seen a few issues like this but never this consistent. It is Saturday morning and the team’s got the weekend off, but let me get with them first thing Monday morning. My apologies.
I’ve been wondering about the streaming module inside the PMG 512 DAC — can it really deliver the same sonic performance as a purpose-built device like the AirLens streamer?
From what I’ve seen, the internal streaming board is a tiny plug-on module, and I have a hard time believing it’s been engineered with the same attention to things like clock architecture, galvanic isolation, noise suppression, and power regulation as the AirLens. It almost gives the impression that, toward the end of the PMG 512’s development, someone decided, “It would be nice if it could also stream,” and they simply added a basic module to achieve feature parity with other streamer-DAC combos.
After all, there’s still no Roon certification, and what I read here suggest the built-in streamer is not entirely free of issues. My dealer also wasn’t particularly confident in its capabilities from a quality standpoint.
So my question is: from a design and sonic perspective, is there any real advantage to using the onboard streaming module — or is it more of a functional convenience that inevitably compromises performance compared to a dedicated network transport like the AirLens?
Hi Paul, thanks for your quick reply.
This sounds good - waiting for any news in this matter and the new firmware ![]()
It is more advanced than the AirLens which, itself, is a tiny SOM on top of a motherboard we designed with all the clocks and isolation. The same sort of architecture, precision rechecking, galvanic isolation, and care that went into the AirLens is put into the internal PMG streamer, plus we avoid the interconnects and interface required by the AirLens.
To my ears there’s a rather obvious sonic advantage to the built in streamer on the PMG, but, obviously, if you prefer the sound of the excellent AirLens, then by all means continuing with it.
The Roon certification process is nearly complete and we’re wrapping it up.
I have to agree with Paul. I did not have an Airlens to compare it to but I did have a modified eversolo with LPS. The difference between the two was obvious. The internal streamer was much better sounding. I was using a higher end Wire World cable as well. One less cable one less power cord are added bonus.
Roon certification is the last piece of the puzzle needed (if that is what you use).
Hell Folks:
Delia and The PSA Customer Support Team were very helpful. I received my replacement PMG DAC yesterday afternoon. I started the burn in process and gave it several hours. I have the PSA Transport and Airlens connected via HDMI Dragon through the I2S inputs. I have all PSA stuff including the BHK 600’s and the FR-30’s. My first impressions were satisfying enough. As a result, my old MKII has been packed away and ready to send back. I have not messed with the internal streamer yet. As a first impression, I listened through the Airlens via Qobuz and it was startling. More to come.
Yesterday I did not switch on/off the main switch, I‘ve only dimmed the display on the DAC during hearing. But today as I switched on the DAC, the display problems was not longer there.
Maybe its also a problem with longer operation and heat - hope this info helps to detect whats wrong with it.
In my yesterdays post, I forgot also to mention that the display was flashing every 1-2 seconds - normal display with what you see on my second photo.
