PMG 512 DAC first impressions

Simply try several times - for me its takes 2-3 times asking it to look for new firmware in short succession and then it usually does on the 2 or third try - persistence in a short window seems to work

Day old 512, sounding good, the streamer is also very good, might have to keep the T8 for Radio Paradise etc.

PMG PRE coming next

I really like the sound of Maestro on PMG512 streamer, more than Maestro on MU2. Maestro with PMG streamer is the best way to go.

However, when using Roon with both MU2 and PMG streamer, I like MU2 SQ a little better than PMG. The difference is subtle but there is a difference. I believe it has something to do with the power cords and ICs I am using in my system. I have more silver conductors in these expensive cables than many. They brought the best from my system and may also result in my preference.

But, I believe, the most important factor contributing my preference may be due to the jumper I am using for the upper boxes of FR30. The AQ Dragon jumper gives remarkable details with a higher energy on treble and mid (not bright sounding) than the stock jumper. It improves SQ from MU2 streaming hugely! However, it made the PMG sounded a little too expressive to my liking. MU2 continues giving a more relaxed and warmer SQ.

So, I still like MU2 using Roon more than other combinations, but that just me.

That worked!

Thanks. I had tried a couple of times to no avail but persistence paid off. Now I need to test it with Spotify.

Have about 100+ hours on 512 and am extremely happy…I will set up the internal streamer this weekend, have been using PST and Airlens…I prefer my FR20’s with its spikes directly into thick hard wood floor and a double run of Cerious speaker cables rather than jumpers…

Be intrigued to see if something like the Stack Audio Auva 100s would make any improvements under the FR20s translating any resonance into heat as they do and providing a rock solid base to play from - doing wonders under my Alta Audio Alyssa Bookshelfs

I’m strongly considering replacing the spikes on my Vandersteen 5A Carbons with Auva 100s. What improvements did you hear with your Alyssas?

In my room its been a bass control and imaging clean up challenge. The Auvas do that very well. The clean up the image in terms of instrument separation as well as the Auvas helping achieve a deeper front to back soundstage (though the Auva SW under my 2x REL S/510s were the main contributors to that soundstage seeming to go deep into the wall) There is a sense that the speakers are better anchored and so the sound sound a little crisper. I have a pair of Atacam studio stands with each of the 4 down tubes filled with their Atabyte discs to drive out resonance and then on the Auva 100s - its just solid and on top of the imaging and soundstage for me helps the background go ‘darker’. I can listen to the very last fading notes of a track and have been often surprised by the little flourishes I didn’t even know were there

I have tried a number of footers and the cone spikes seemed to perform the worst. Oreas are not bad, metal columns with ceramic balls sound good but a little on the lean side. Herbies Giant Slider is another one but it is not as good as Stack Audio.

Stack Audio AUVA 100 provided the best balanced sound under my FR30 speaker.

I have found the thickness of the wood floor is relevant. Typical wood floors are often shoddy. Fortunately my house came with thick hard wood over the floor itself. But maybe some fun experimenting ahead. I’ve also found it helps to have the spikes go into the wood and not use floor protectors.

The FR30s are probably the closest, weight-wise and frequency-range-wise, to my speakers, but based on what both of you have said, it sounds as though they work well with either floor standing speakers or stand, uh, standing speakers. My speakers are on carpet, so I’d be using the AUVAs with their spikes installed.

Thanks for your input!

Don’t know if this was previously posted but my friend just sent me this link:

good review, it was in print, and now online!
