PMG Signature Pre has arrived and it sounds amazing

I’ll have to look in the box if something is there

A buddy of mine had a Meridian 568 Digital Surround Processor which had an interesting remote. I believe he kept an ancient laptop with an older Windows OS in order to make changes.

I had a Meridian remote similar to that for one of their DAC’s and digital pre amps.
The thieves that ripped off my system stupidly left behind the remote they needed to operate the system, probably because it doesn’t look like a remote.

This should be in your MU2 box, shown below.
You can have mine if you don’t.
If you have the MU2 app on your phone or pad, you should have no need for another.

Good idea - @Elk ?

Eager to hear more feedback related to the PMG preamp performance itself

I programmed an Apple remote to control volume on the MU2, I only use the phone to switch sources…

I shipped my BHK pre back Tuesday and that was before the PMG hit second gear which it did that evening after between 50 and 60 hours of playing time. This is the first time I have had a solid state amp in my system since the Adcom 565 which I purchased new in the last century.
I have had more than a few preamps in my system and all of them gave me slightly improved sound over the predecessor but none of them came close to what the PMG does right out of the box. This is a very special piece of gear. No make that very, very special. My system is at the stage where I am very happy with incremental improvements. To get a large jump in performance like this was a delightful surprise.
I don’t know if itwill continue to improve as it breaks in but I hope it settles in before the DAC arrives. For those of you who can’t purchase new at this time but are considering a preamp ,I would audition a BHK which was the best preamp I had up until the PMG. There should be some really good prices online for the BHK’s in the very near future.

I’ve been thinking the same about the BHK developing into a great deal in the not too distant future. Would you mind putting into words what a buyer would be giving up by choosing a BHK now as opposed to a PMG in a couple of years?

@rinkel The PMG provides more detail, a bigger soundstage and goes deeper in the bass. It provides so much detail that it appears to play louder than it does. I really liked the BHK . It bested a more expensive and well reviewed preamp . If you can’t afford the PMG , I would audition the BHK . I think that in the near future you could probably pick one up for less than 3K which would be a performance steal.

I sold my BHK for less than $3k over 3 years ago and better deals on it can be had. The Stellar Gold pre has turned some heads as well and that could be a value leader for you. I do not endorse products without long term first had experience, but those I trust, including one of PSA’s own, like it.

Thanks for this wonderful review. It’s sure a lot more interesting and believable than coming from me, but I get just as excited as you and have also discovered that after some break in (all the power supply caps inside) the magic just keeps on coming. Can’t wait! Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Every once in a while the healing crystals need to have their Chakras aligned. Sometimes it requires a professional. In this case, you were enough. Victory!

I’m cheap. I’m always looking for a deal but the differences you describe are all the kinds of things I would pay extra for in a preamp.

After a couple of days of FedEx “out for delivery” messing about with my PMG pre - it finally arrived. Replaced my BHK pre, powered on - and started up immediately - no waiting for tube warm up. Pleasantly surprised with that. Started playing the last thing I listened to - Beirut’s new album, A Study of Losses. First song - sounds nice. Second song - sounds really nice, then one minute into the song, the soundfield just explodes. Wider, deeper and yet more in-your-face than I have ever heard. WOW. That’s all it took - BHK is getting packed up and sent back.

I listened for another few hours - till 1am, still have to go to work tomorrow. 24 hours later, and another night of listening to this remarkable piece of kit (left it playing music while at work). I always chuckle when Paul announces a new piece - more hyperbole of “best sounding component ever made”, but this time - I cant argue with the fact that it put a smile on my face, and continues to do so. The sound is so organic and natural. Bass is deeper, more articulate. Cymbals just sound so alive and real. Only issue I have so far is complicated multi-instrument passages are a bit muddy when it gets loud - I am expecting this to mellow out as time passes.

One very nice surprise - no clicking as the volume changes. that always annoyed me a bit with the BHK. The screen is easy to see, and the volume ring graphic is a nice touch, mimicking the volume level. No problem with the remote - works in all different locations for me.

Only downside - two fuses! I have not fallen down that rabbit hole yet, but when I do, now it will be twice as expensive - can’t wait for the fun to begin.

I honestly thought the BHK was the weakest link in my system, and was really looking forward to the replacement. If the PMG DAC is as much or better of an improvement as Paul is hinting at - I will truly be in HiFI heaven. Deposit paid and waiting for production. HiFI budget is blown for the next couple of years.

Congrats on your new PMG Pre, what Dac are you currently using? I also have the PMG Dac on order.

Using the DS MKII with AirLens. Upgraded from MKI with bridge2. I thought that would be my reference for years (with associated firmware updates), but Paul has promised the new DAC is significantly better - oh well, there goes another $5k.

The new dac (PMG) is $8,999
