Porcupine in my lap

My brother is a big fan of the alternative group Porcupine Tree. I decided to check out their latest album. Never knowing what to expect from his suggestions, all I knew was that anything produced by Steven Wilson is going to have great audio quality. I started the first track. Pretty good. But then something amazing happened. There was a very faint mysterious sound coming from out of nowhere. Like a whole different song, by a different group. And the sound was truly 3-dimensional - not to the left or right, but in the center, as though it was right in front of me, literally in my lap. How did they do this? Then I learned how they did it: I looked down in my lap and found my iPhone there and it was playing a song by someone else. Apparently, a song on Apple Music had started. So my next question was to ask how in the world Steven Wilson had started my iPhone, chose the song, etc. I know I am often guilty of butt-dialing and other “accidents” on my phone, but this one - no way. I’d be interested to know whether this has ever happened to anyone else listening to Porcupine Tree or other recordings engineered by Steven Wilson.

Hi,

Steven Wilson’s exceptional talent and various projects (PTree, solo albums, Blackfield…), music and audio-engineering, have been core to my relationship with music.

I’ve never experienced what you’re describing, neither when listening to his stereo nor surround mixes.

Take care.

I agree that pretty much anything Steven Wilson touches is great from an audiophile perspective - I’ve heard many of his remastering projects.

Now as far as the rest of my post, I hope you know that my tongue was planted pretty firmly in my cheek!
