This is not a comparable product, IMO. Different capabilities and different specifications. Just two examples: 1) the I2S ouputs (at first read at least) appear to be proprietary for linking to a Rockna DAC; and 2) this kit includes a CD transport.
FWIW.
PS
I do think this is a lust-worthy piece of kit though.
Were you snooping around the dark corners of the web site? Not more than ten minutes before I saw this I looked to see if this, the AirLens, or FR20 had shown up. Not a one. I even double checked a moment ago. Not there.
I would suspect firmware updates, just like the PST. There is a USB connector, most likely for a thumb drive. No SD card slot so that would seem to answer the question.
Plus one also have a raspi streamer - Pi3B (so not even the 4 with separate USB buss).
up to 192 via TOSLINK / SPDIF via a HiFiBerry board, or 768kHz via USB.
I understand the I2C link to the add-on HATs is limited to 192, but not USB.
The Pi4 ought to be capable of a lot faster (again via USB).
I’ve not seen an I2S output add-on for a Pi that goes over 192 kHz.
I found this a funny statement: There has never been a better sounding DAC at anywhere close to the price of DirectStream MK2, while it’s not out in the wild yet and having an empty review section to substantiate it. On the other hand: love to see this come true on the shortest possible notice.
Interesting that the LAN port on the DSD MK2 is not in the input area. Leads me to believe it can’t be used as an input.
So I should be able to connect my ZENith Mk3 directly to the DSD MK2 with a really good USB cable. And because of ZEN’s ultra low noise USB audio output and the DSD’s galvanically isolated input, this should be every bit as good as ethernet… and without the need for an AirLens, a Matrix, or anything else.
Will the MK2 be a Roon endpoint, as well as the AirLens?
