I’m gonna go look up the fidata NAS now
The AirLens manual says this:
To connect to Wi-Fi, make sure the Ethernet cable is unplugged first. If it’s plugged in, you won’t be able to connect to Wi-Fi.
This might mean that the Wi-Fi receiver is actually turned off (which is what I would prefer) or it might mean that it remains active but is prevented from communicating so that the AirLens doesn’t get two streams at once. Anybody know?
Using an ethernet shortening plug ensures one of disabling both wifi and ethernet functionality and unwanted RF noise.
Blackest background and lowest noise floor experience ever.
There are a few interesting questions to be answered and to be honest, I don’t understand why no one, except Paul if he has the time, answers any question not going in direction DAC‘s (although even Ted is offline since months) or speakers.
Various people visit on occasion, but no one is monitoring the forum to answer questions.
The best way to contact PS Audio remains a phone call.
If that’s the concept (in case there is a defined or changed one), I understand it generally. It probably just needs a slight change in mind (of me) from a perception that possibly never was an intended status (also not in situations of fresh product releases). This perception was: at times there was even someone explicitly responsible for monitoring the forum and individual designers of products were - especially at times of product releases - intensive interlocutors in the corresponding threads, sometimes for months or years.
A manufacturer independent forum always just exists for user exchange only and I also know manufacturer forums (a bike manufacturer one for example), which are explicitly defined as a user exchange forum only, without participation of company staff. Goes in strange directions sometimes, not always necessarily beneficial for the companies reputation. But as there’s still contribution of PSA staff, this forum is different from that.
What differentiates PSA’s initial situation in connection with the forum from those others, is the dealer-less business model and the „family“ approach. I certainly further see the latter, as well as a lot of forum contributions of PSA staff. But I also recognize, even in the dealer-less model, it’s not necessarily the intention to process as much of user questions and discussions as possible over the forum instead over phone. I don’t want to judge which is more efficient, may be the one or the other.
My idea of the most efficient one would be an add. FAQ based, structured approach for products, fed by PSA staff only from previous forum discussions.
Thanks for those evaluating thoughts. I get your line of thinking. It considers the forum being part of a structured communication strategy in the first place. Not quite sure about that. But if that’s the case and it needs to be restructured in the way you’re suggesting, that would be a hard thing to do these days, IMO. With old and (an ever expanding array of) new media, with no bulls eye around, where to point and shoot?
If anything, the forum may still be the best place for true interaction between company of the size of PSA and interested consumers. My bet would be to further engage the PSA CEO/lead designers in forum interaction, although in a more (inter)active and structured manner per product. The way Ted and Chris do that provides a good start. More (inter)active may also show in e.g. manual updates, SW development increments and update path, etc. I’m aware of HR cost consequences, but these can be seen (and mentioned) as part of the overall promotional efforts of the company.
This company forum effort can be complemented with a closed curated FQA section, just as you suggested, also with a copy/link to the formal website.
Just my leftover cent.
There have been many wonderful infections between various members of PS Audio and forum members. We are exceedingly fortunate.
I suggest only that one not presume PS Audio is monitoring all of the posts with the intent of answering every question.
It is so nice that they allow us to write here! It’s a fine group of people!
And remarkably tolerant.
I believe it is turned off. I’ll check with our engineer, Barry. He’s stuck at Burning Man this week and because of the rains can’t get out.
I wish I was as well!
True hippies will always be part of the population. And that’s a good thing.
They may be able to save the planet for the rest.
James has has been a regular contributor up until a few months back and his help was always welcomed. I spoke with him recently when I purchased my AirLens and asked about his status and he told me he has been given additional duties (he didn’t elaborate nor did I ask what they were, not my place) so he hasn’t had much time for the forum. Aaron, the Sales Manager, has been trying to have a presence but he’s busy too. As others have said, it makes sense to have a manufacturer presence here, I’ll leave it at that …
on this thread, in past 5 days, 4 responses from Paul and 1 from Aaron…I’m thinking we were spoiled by all the Ted responses for such a long time…
I would not expect the boss himself to be in charge here anyway
The entire PS Audio team has spoiled us.
One question for further spoiling (besides the wifi/off question):
Would it make sense to further manually shield the air gap radiation (even if tiny and not measurable) comparable to Ted’s recommendations to shield some DS Mk I chips??
Keep in mind Ted does not work for PS Audio, he is a contractor. He designed the basic architecture of the DS DAC and at this point is only responsible for the programming of the FPGA. PS Audio turned Ted’s design into a production product designing the power supply, user interface, and the casework. Ted does know both DS inside and out, but there is only so much he has control over.
Ted’s hard at work on finishing up the beta release of Massive so we can do an official launch sometime (hopefully) this month. It’s a lot of work and Ted’s the kind of guy that likes to bury himself in the bits.
