Hi Luca, the subjects of how to build one’s own library of files on a file server as well as of how to set up streaming services… for example, how to sync Tidal and Roon playlists… have come up on this thread a few times and Elk kindly hived them off into other threads. Maybe try the search button some to check advice given in those. My own two cents… do some trials of the streaming services. Myself, I am a file server person. So I use the download side of Qobuz. But most folks I know using Qobuz are streaming customers. Even more folks I know are Tidal streaming customers. The playlists available are great. At least the one my neighbour gets. And then there is the Amazon HD crowd. Myself, I like that music downloads that I buy on Bandcamp… which are often 24-bit but not labelled as such… are also on their app for streaming. Note: Epic Games bought Bandcamp last month.
Exactly.
But it is less of a streamer than those that can index music. But, yeah, probably sounds great!
Thanks Tak, I got behind the TV renderer settings and turned off the FFmpeg. DSD playback from the NAS files stopped. But 24-192 still played OK. I found in there that this is set as the max. Presumably, DSD would work with the AirLens. Note: I do not need software file management as I know what music is where in which format on my NAS. At least not until the grey matter gives it up.
Thank you. I need to experiment during next times.
First step (awaiting AirLens) will be become familiar with Roon then with my actual gear. And before the first step, I need to understand how I can use Roon on my MacMini controlled by the iPad without interruptions each time the MacMini goes in stand by mode. I bought this device last december
it is still in the box.
Just happened to pull a couple videos off the MQA site yesterday and posted on the “What YouTube” forum thread. The posted video, “Nameless” Dominique Fils-Aime" streaming thru my DragonflyRed/Pass HPA-1/AudezeLCDXs really caught my attention as being recorded exceptionally well. This made me re-check Paul"s info post on the AirLens earlier in the thread, and yes, the AirLens will unfold MQA. Connect the dots to the new DSII (which I may be assuming here) unfolds the rest of the MQA stream? Having never heard a full MQA unfold, but hearing undeniable SQ on the MQA site, this possibility may be an unexpected additional measure of greatness if one were to aspire towards the double upgrade? At the very least, this possibility has peaked my interest…
Sorry I’m going off topic. I was started from wifi connection from MacMini to AirLens then I went out the border line of the thread. Too much food for thoughts for me.
@luca.pelliccioli No prob. There are LOTS of threads about Roon with a MacMini. And even articles from Paul himself.
@j1hampton Indeed, the Dominique Fils-Aimé track Nameless itself is really excellent for A-B testing vocals. I have a 24-88 download from Qobuz of her three albums. Highly recommended, even streamed, not just downloaded. Or even as MQA I suppose
It will depend on what you are currently using for a renderer. depending on what your current renderer is capable of, you may still need transcoding. For example, with the Bridge, I only stream PCM/Flac without transcoding. If I stream to my media PC or Raspberry Pi, I can stream pretty much anything with no transcoding, as they show up as renderers via JRiver (which I run on both).
The PC outputs to the DS via USB or i2s (right now via the Matrix SPDIF 2). I built the Pi as an i2s streamer.
I THINK (haven’t loooked at the Bubble settings in awhile) there’s a setting to only transcode file types not supported by the renderer.
You might also want to try the mconnect app as well. I’ve tried the lite version (free), and it’s decent too.
If AirLens won’t be a Roon end-point, then that will probably disqualify it for me. Why not making it a roon end-point? Can’t figure out the logic…
I do believe earlier in this thread that it was said it will be a Roon end point with the goal of making Roon sound quality a priority.
That’s what I understand also. I am a Roon fanboy so it’s a must for me.
Ah, must’ve missed that. Thanks @paul172! And the AirLens is now highest on my list again!!!
Hey, at this point I just want a single box Ethernet to I2S solution that won’t go into zombieland every time the world sneezes. My ultraRendu and Matrix are great, really they are, but for example I had a power glitch over the weekend. Getting the two of them to play nice together after that was the same PITA it always is when something interrupts that data stream. Those two things are the most unresilient devices I’ve ever had the annoying fortune to play with.
That’s interesting. Can you describe what the problem is/was? Does it appear to be an issue with the Ultra, Matrix, or both? I’ve been playing with a Matrix since getting a deal on one. Most of the time I have it hooked to my dedicated media PC, as the motherboard has a special 2.0 port specifically for audio purposes (Dac-Up). It runs Windows 10 with JRiver.
There was one time when something was frozen. It APPEARED to be a problem with the Matrix, as JRiver indicated the file was playing (but it still could have been a driver or other prob in the PC).
The Matrix had the green LED (it was a PCM file), but the DS actually indicated no connection (red dot).
The only way I got everything going again was to reboot everything including the DS.
Ted stated somewhere that the DS could occasionally glicth when there’s a brief power drop, though I don’t recall any at the time, and when I read that, it was some time after so couldn’t recall.
No USB output will limit the AirLens’ compatibility with a large number of non-PS Audio DACs currently on the market.
I agree. That seems like a lot of DAC owners would shy away.
Though, if the DS MKII arrives too, then plenty of PS Audio DAC customers will upgrade. There will be a supply of used prior model PSA models with I2S-HDMI running the 2021 Sunlight software available for others to upgrade their old-style USB or AES etc DACs. This would support PS Audio DAC residual values and its premium brand value.
Try a Silent Angel Munich M1T for some A-B testing, using a 5V linear power supply like Silent Angel or others offer. Would be quite interested to know what you think as I did get one, finally to have a streamer that can also grab DSD from my NAS to send to my PSA DAC over I2S HDMI (it is compatible with PSA DACs that way) and uses its own app that is similar to BluOS just in different colours (M1T needs firmware upgrade after first boot for latest streaming services like AirPlay 2). LOTs of new models coming out with I2S over HDMI these days. There is another thread about that. But some only use UPnP. The M1T can network properly (and is a Roon endpoint). I got the 8GB version because I have 3TB of music files that it needs to index. A new scan can be done by individual folder if one only put new music in one place. I like that.
I think the idea of using a usb connection that carries 5v on a product whose name basically says galvanic isolation would be something of a contradiction.
That said, I don’t have a problem with usb if done properly and for plenty of people it’s the main option.
I am at a loss to understand what this AirLens product will do given it is neither host for a streaming app or a server, and hence were it will go in systems outside of the confines of PS Audio, where there is clearly a demand for a device that can receive a digital stream and send it via an I2S link to a PS Audio DAC.
I had a look at the Silent Angel products. I have no experience of their performance, but they are stacked with functionality. Ever since I started streaming about 13 or 14 years ago it seemed to me that it would make premium digital audio hardware go the same way as desktop and laptops did 10 to 20 years earlier, with little gain in performance and a dramatic reduction in prices and end up being just a commodity.
The Silent Angel Munich M1 (with DAC) costs £1,000 and does pretty much everything. It’s getting rave reviews and can be upgraded with matching power supply and ethernet switch.

The best thing is that they are sold through dealers (in the UK at least) so you can most certainly get a loan or sale with return option.
The Silent Angel complement is:
Roon Ready, AirPlay2, DLNA, TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, Amazon Music, Highres Audio, internet radio
This is starting to sound a but familiar. My sound/light system, that costs £375 per unit, and each one is a complete audio and lighting system, has:
Roon Ready*, AirPlay2, DLNA, uPnP, TIDAL*, Spotify Connect, Amazon HD, internet radio (* coming soon)
It is clear that Auralic went upmarket to differentiate themselves from the more budget brands, ceasing the brilliant Aries Mini because it was too cheap. That seemed sensible to me. My suspicion is that the market will split between budget and extreme high end with little in the middle. Whether there will be any audible difference, I really wonder.
