PS Audio BHK Phono PreAmp

Hi Paul

Should we start discussions for this product in this forum?

i recently upgraded my analog rig and am looking to replace my Bel Canto Phono 3 to one that can support dual inputs.

Any sneak peaks of what the final BHK Phono will support?

You just did. :)

What else is on your wish list in addition to dual inputs?

Not at the moment. It’s still being developed slowly.

The most important thing to me is quiet. As in dead quiet background. I recently tried a Rogue Ares phono preamp (at $2k) and I was immediately dismayed to hear a not so subtle hum with the unit on. I knew right then and there this prono preamp wasn't for me, tube or not. And to complicate things the settings for gain were either for "low gain cartridges", "medium gain cartridges", or "high gain cartridges". My 0.4 mV Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC Star could not find a happy spot between the gain settings and the loading. It liked the loading of the medium gain setting at 1.1 kOhm but it was waaay too quiet. At least 12 dB too low, more or less. The 1 kOhm loading of the low cartridge setting rolled off the highs like you wouldn't believe. So that underscores the need for easily configurable gain and loading settings. The NPC does all these things in spades, IMO. If you can take the quiet background and basic functionality of the NPC (without the ADC, I guess) and improve on its dynamics and transparency, then you'd really have something, IMO. Two inputs and balanced outs would also be nice!! And a dedicated power supply considering it's a premium unit. And an ADC, too. OK, now I'm getting greedy.

Is A2D converter really ‘wanted’ in a statement product? Doesn’t it just add complexity & noise. I know some ppl like to record their records but the NPC has that covered.

The BHK should be the best (therefore optimised for vinyl playback) for MM, MI, MC and very ‘tuneable’, extremely low noise etc. Multi-box if that gives the best performance. Either battery or very low noise/linear power supply.

Indeed, and that is what it will be.

Paul, Any new news on the BHK phono pre? Is it expected to be released sometime in 2018? Thanks

Any updates for the tubed BHK phono?

No, the efforts have been more on the upcoming Stellar phono.
